Chapter 7 - The Viper's Den

The Sterling Tech boardroom was a masterpiece of intimidation. High above the Seattle skyline, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass, twenty of the most powerful executives in the country sat around a mahogany table.
At the head of the table sat Marcus Vance. He looked perfectly at ease, sipping a glass of sparkling water, his silver hair impeccably styled.
When I walked through the double doors, the room fell silent.
"David," Marcus smiled warmly, spreading his hands. "We were surprised by the emergency summons. What is this about a hostile takeover?"
I didn't sit down. I walked slowly around the table, holding a small black remote.
"Sterling Tech has had a phenomenal quarter, Marcus," I said, my voice echoing off the glass. "But I've been doing some auditing. It seems we have a leak. A rather massive one. Three hundred million dollars in unaccounted funds, funneled through shell companies in Cyprus."
Marcus's smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but he recovered perfectly. "David, that's a serious accusation. If there's an accounting error—"
"It's not an error," I interrupted. I pressed the remote.
The massive digital projector screen at the end of the room hummed to life. But it didn't show financial graphs. It showed Thomas's face.
"If you are watching this, David, it means Marcus found me."
The color drained from Marcus's face entirely. The executives around the table gasped in horror as Thomas's voice filled the room, detailing the treason, the embezzlement, and the assassination.
"Turn that off!" Marcus roared, leaping to his feet. "This is a deepfake! A fabrication!"
I pulled the micro-SD card from my pocket and tossed it onto the mahogany table. It slid to a halt right in front of Marcus.

"The FBI doesn't think so, Marcus," I said softly.
Before Marcus could speak, the glass doors of the boardroom burst open. Thirty heavily armed federal agents poured into the room.
