Chapter 6 - The Voice of the Dead

I clicked play.

My breath caught. There, on the screen, was my brother Thomas. He looked exhausted, sitting in his old office, the shadows of the room obscuring his face.

"If you are watching this, David, it means Marcus found me," Thomas’s voice echoed through the cold server room. "I'm sorry I didn't come to you first. But Marcus has bought half the board. He has the police in his pocket. If I told you, he would have killed you too."

Tears blurred my vision. I touched the screen, tracing the image of the brother I had mourned for six years.

"Marcus is selling our drone schematics to a syndicate in Eastern Europe. The routing numbers are attached to this file. But David... there's something else." Thomas looked off-camera, a soft, heartbreaking smile touching his lips. "Sarah is pregnant. If anything happens to me, Marcus will hunt her down to tie up loose ends. Protect them, David. They are your family now. Give them the life I couldn't."

The screen went black.

I sat in the glow of the monitors for a long time. The empty, hollow billionaire who had woken up that morning was dead. In his place was a man forged in pure, righteous fury.

I didn't just want Marcus arrested. I wanted his entire world burned to the ground.

I picked up the phone and called my Chief Operating Officer, a woman who had been loyal to my father and hated Marcus. "Elena. Call an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. Tell Marcus it's regarding a hostile takeover."

"A hostile takeover?" Elena asked, confused. "By who?"

"By me."
