Chapter 6 - The Hunted

Gideon stared at the dusty radio in absolute, paralyzed disbelief.
Victor had masterfully manipulated the local police force to completely frame him for the entire conspiracy.
If the police found them now, they would automatically assume Gideon was a lethal threat to the child.
If Victor's private mercenaries found them first, they would simply murder them both and bury the bodies in the snow.
"Why did the radio say my name?" Norah asked, her big eyes reflecting the flickering orange flames of the barrel fire.
"Because the bad men are trying to make people believe a terrible lie about us," Gideon explained softly.
He pulled out his encrypted burner phone, praying the remote mountain location had a shred of cellular reception.
He had exactly one single bar of signal.
Gideon immediately dialed the direct number of an investigative journalist he had secretly funded for years.
Sarah Jenkins answered on the very first ring, her voice tight with obvious panic.
"Gideon, your face is plastered on every single news channel in the country right now," Sarah whispered urgently.
"I didn't hurt that little girl, Sarah, I am desperately trying to protect her from Victor Vance," Gideon replied firmly.
"I know Victor is completely corrupt, but you need to give me hard proof right now," she demanded.
Gideon quickly explained the highly encrypted flash drive and the terrifying video footage of the dockland executions.
He promised to securely transmit the massive data files to her private server as soon as he found a stable internet connection.
"You need to hide immediately, Gideon, because Victor is utilizing massive resources to track your exact location," Sarah warned.
"Where is the mother right now?" Gideon asked, desperate for a tactical update.
"That's exactly why I was trying to call you," Sarah said, her voice trembling slightly.
"Victor just legally purchased the private medical facility where your security chief is hiding her."
Gideon felt a violent surge of pure panic course through his veins.
"He is actively moving her to a secure, undisclosed location under the guise of specialized medical treatment," Sarah explained.
Gideon abruptly ended the call, crushing the burner phone beneath his heavy leather boot to prevent GPS tracking.
He looked down at Norah, who was quietly sleeping by the warm fire, completely unaware of the massive manhunt.
He knew he could not possibly drag a freezing child through the deadly mountains while being hunted by an army.
He needed a radical, highly dangerous plan to completely flip the board on Victor.
Gideon gently picked the sleeping child up in his arms and walked out into the raging blizzard toward a nearby highway.
He aggressively flagged down a passing commercial logging truck, flashing a massive stack of hundred-dollar bills.
He paid the shocked driver to transport them securely back into the absolute heart of the dangerous city.

Gideon realized that running away was no longer a viable option to survive this nightmare.
He had to willingly walk directly into the literal belly of the beast.
