Chapter 9 - The Fall from Grace

My fingers clamped desperately around the fabric of Lucia's dress.
The immense momentum pulled my upper body entirely over the rusted railing.
I dangled helplessly over the deadly drop, holding my screaming daughter with one trembling arm.
My boots scrambled frantically against the slick metal grate, desperately trying to find purchase.
Celeste recovered from the headbutt, blood pouring heavily from her shattered nose.
She let out a furious scream and raised the silver revolver to shoot me in the back.
Before she could pull the trigger, the massive warehouse doors exploded inward.
Adrian's armored SUV smashed into a steel support beam directly below the catwalk.
The violent impact caused the entire rusted metal structure to groan and tilt wildly.
Celeste lost her footing completely, dropping her weapon as she slid toward the edge.
She scrambled frantically, but there was nothing for her manicured hands to grab onto.
She slipped over the edge, plummeting three stories down into the freezing, churning ocean below.
Adrian sprinted up the iron stairs faster than I had ever seen a human being move.
He grabbed my waist with his incredibly strong arms and hauled both of us safely back over the railing.
I collapsed onto the cold metal platform, wrapping my body entirely around my sobbing daughter.
Adrian dropped to his knees beside us, pulling us both into a fierce, protective embrace.
The sound of police sirens finally cut through the raging thunderstorm outside.
Dozens of heavily armed SWAT officers flooded the warehouse, searching the dark water for any sign of Celeste.
They eventually dragged her out of the bay, freezing, battered, and completely defeated.
She was immediately placed in handcuffs and charged with kidnapping, attempted murder, and corporate fraud.
Adrian looked at me, brushing the wet hair away from my face with incredible tenderness.
May you like
He told me the nightmare was finally over, and it was time for us to go home.
We walked out of the dark warehouse together, knowing we had finally taken our family's legacy back.
