Chapter 5 - The Breath of Death

The toxic green gas quickly filled the narrow hospital corridor.
My eyes began to water violently, and every breath felt like inhaling crushed glass.
Adrian grabbed my arm and pulled me toward a heavy glass window looking into an empty operating room.
He raised his pistol and fired three shots directly into the reinforced glass.
The bullets barely made a dent in the shatterproof surface.
My knees grew weak, and the edges of my vision began to turn black.
Adrian frantically searched his pockets and pulled out a heavy tungsten pen.
He slammed the sharp point of the pen into the corner of the glass with all his remaining strength.
The entire pane spider-webbed, and he kicked it completely out of the frame.
We tumbled into the operating room, gasping for the clean, filtered air inside.
I collapsed onto the sterile tile floor, coughing violently as my lungs desperately tried to clear the poison.
Adrian helped me to my feet, his own breathing ragged and heavy.
We pushed through the double doors leading into the VIP recovery ward.
We found Eleanor Vale in room 402, hooked up to a dozen monitors exactly like the video had shown.
She was deeply sedated, but she was still breathing on her own.
I rushed to her bedside and carefully removed the IV line before anyone could inject the poison.
Adrian gently scooped his frail grandmother into his strong arms.
We needed to get her back to the secure penthouse before midnight.
As we walked toward the emergency exit stairwell, the lights in the ward suddenly flickered and died.
The heavy, rhythmic sound of military boots echoed up the concrete stairs.
A dozen heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical gear stepped onto the landing, completely blocking our only way out.
Standing behind them was Judge Arthur Winthrop, smoking an expensive cigar.
May you like
He smiled coldly and ordered his men to execute us on the spot.
Just as the mercenaries raised their assault rifles, a massive explosion shook the entire foundation of the clinic.
