Chapter 3 - The House Manager's Confession

Mrs. Harper froze with a stack of cash clutched in her trembling hands.

The sheer amount of money on her desk was easily worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I closed the door behind me and locked it quietly.

I told her she was not leaving this mansion until she told me exactly what was in the ventilation system.

She dropped the money and began to sob uncontrollably.

She swore she never wanted to hurt those sweet little boys.

She confessed that someone had been paying her a fortune every month simply to ignore the strange smells.

She was also ordered to wipe the security camera footage outside the twins' bedroom every night at midnight.

I demanded to know the identity of the person paying her this massive bribe.

She shook her head violently, claiming that the drop-offs were entirely anonymous.

She warned me that the people running this operation were incredibly dangerous and powerful.

She begged me to take a share of the money and run away before I ended up dead.

I refused her dirty money and told her we were going to tell Vincent the absolute truth right now.

I grabbed her arm to pull her toward the door.

Suddenly, a massive, deafening alarm siren began to blare throughout the entire estate.

Thick steel shutters instantly slammed down over every single window in the office.

The heavy electronic lock on the office door flashed dark red, sealing us inside.

The mansion's automated security system had just initiated a total lockdown protocol.

A synthetic voice echoed from the ceiling speakers, announcing a severe biological hazard in sector four.

Mrs. Harper looked at me with eyes full of absolute terror.

She grabbed her throat and began to gasp violently for air.

She stumbled backward and crashed into her desk, sending the stacks of money flying everywhere.

White foam began to bubble aggressively from the corners of her mouth.

I rushed to her side and rolled her onto her side to prevent her from choking.

I realized she had just taken a sip from the water glass on her desk before I entered.

Someone had poisoned her drinking water to ensure her permanent silence.

Her body convulsed one final time before she went completely still on the expensive rug.

I placed two fingers against her neck and found absolutely no pulse.

The house manager was dead.

I was locked in a room with a corpse and a mountain of illegal cash.

The synthetic voice over the intercom spoke again, but this time it was not an automated recording.

It was Doctor Blake's smooth, arrogant voice echoing through the hidden speakers.

He cheerfully announced that the police had just been dispatched to the estate.

He told me they were coming to arrest the deranged new nanny who had just murdered the house manager and poisoned the billionaire's children.
