Chapter 6 - The Setup

I opened my eyes and watched David's pistol clatter to the concrete roof. David screamed in agony, clutching his shattered wrist as blood poured between his fingers. Adrian stepped out of the shadows of the stairwell, holding a smoking handgun. His face was a mask of absolute, unforgiving rage. He kicked David's weapon over the edge of the building and pinned the wounded man to the ground. "You really thought I would let my fiancée walk away without a tracker on her?" Adrian growled. I collapsed to my knees, holding Mia tightly as sobs of overwhelming relief racked my body. Adrian's security team swarmed the roof, immediately dragging David away in heavy steel handcuffs. Adrian rushed to my side, dropping his weapon and pulling me fiercely into his broad chest. "I am so sorry I let him get near you," Adrian whispered, burying his face in my hair. I clung to him, realizing in that exact moment that this fake marriage had become entirely real to me. "You saved us," I cried, resting my head against his racing heart. We returned to the penthouse, surrounded by an absolute fortress of armed guards. The next morning, the police formally charged David with extortion, attempted murder, and fraud. Adrian used the confession to drag Victoria out of the corporate headquarters in handcuffs. The scandal rocked the financial world, but it secured Adrian's position as the undisputed CEO. Our wedding was scheduled for the following week, and the entire city was eagerly watching. I sat on the edge of our massive bed, watching Adrian adjust his tie in the mirror. "It is over," I smiled, feeling a profound sense of peace for the first time in years. Adrian walked over, sitting beside me and gently taking my hands in his. "Chloe, there is something I have to confess before we take our vows," Adrian said nervously. His gray-blue eyes were filled with a strange, heavy guilt. "I didn't pick you out of the creative department by random chance," he admitted softly. "I have known exactly who you were for over five years." I stared at him in complete confusion, trying to process this sudden revelation. "What do you mean you knew me?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Before Adrian could answer, the bedroom door violently burst open. Marcus, the trusted head of security, stood in the doorway with his weapon aimed directly at Adrian. "Change of plans, boss," Marcus sneered, his finger tightening on the trigger.
