Chapter 10 - The False Victory

I stepped away from the desk, my mind racing to process the betrayal of everyone in this house.
"You're an undercover federal agent," I stated, staring right at Camille.
She flinched slightly, confirming Dante's intelligence.
"I was trying to build a RICO case against him," she admitted quietly.
"But when he transferred the assets to Marco, it complicated everything."
"I poisoned your teas to prevent him from cementing his bloodline, hoping he would slip up with the money."
"It was just business, Elena."
I felt a surge of violent rage, but I pushed it down.
I needed to act fast.
"If you want to take him down, let me leave with the baby," I offered.
"I just transferred the master control of the trust into a neutral account using his laptop."
"Roman has no money to pay his guards tomorrow."
Camille's eyes widened in sheer shock.
"You did what?"
"I ruined him," I said coldly.
I handed her the printed confirmation of the transfer.
"Take this to your federal handlers."
"Arrest him."
Camille took the paper, a genuine smile breaking across her face.
She had finally won her five-year undercover operation.
Within twenty minutes, I heard the sirens echoing up the long driveway.
Dozens of FBI vehicles swarmed the estate, storming the front doors.
I stood on the balcony holding Marco, watching as federal agents dragged a furious, screaming Roman out of the mansion in handcuffs.
He locked eyes with me from the courtyard, roaring promises of vengeance, but he was finally powerless.
The nightmare was over.
I packed a small duffel bag, grabbed the keys to a modest sedan from the garage, and strapped Marco into his car seat.
I had neutralized my husband, outsmarted the feds, and secured my freedom.
I climbed into the driver's seat and let out a massive sigh of relief as I started the engine.
As the car rumbled to life, the passenger door suddenly opened.
Patricia Alvarez, the gray-haired night nurse from the hospital, slid into the passenger seat.
She closed the door calmly and pointed a suppressed pistol directly at my ribs.
"You did very well getting rid of Roman, Elena," Patricia smiled, her eyes cold and dead.
"The Chicago Outfit has been trying to clear him out for twenty years."
She reached into the back and gently stroked Marco's sleeping head.

"Now, drive to the safe house."
"The baby belongs to us now."
