Chapter 9 - The Safehouse

Elena twisted around in her seat and looked out the back window of the SUV.
There were no headlights following them.
There were no police cruisers or Russian hit squads on their tail.
Instead, the entire New York skyline was lit up by a massive, unnatural glow in the distance.
"Is that..." Elena started, her voice catching in her throat.
"It's the estate," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a hollow, dangerous whisper.
The Moretti mansion, a fortress that had stood untouched for three generations, was burning to the ground.
The attack at the shipyard had been a diversion.
Julian was just a pawn sacrificed to get Adrian out of his heavily fortified home.
"They bypassed the outer security grid completely," Carlo said, typing frantically on a dashboard computer.
"Whoever hit the house had our master access codes."
Adrian leaned back against the leather seat, closing his eyes as the weight of the betrayal settled over him.
Only three people in the world had those codes.
Adrian, Carlo, and the man who installed the system five years ago.
"Take us to the vault," Adrian ordered, his eyes snapping open with a terrifying clarity.
Carlo nodded and steered the SUV toward the financial district of Manhattan.
They pulled into an underground parking garage beneath a massive, unmarked skyscraper.
Adrian led them to a private elevator that required a retinal scan to operate.
The doors opened into a luxurious, hyper-secure penthouse that looked more like a bank vault than an apartment.
"We are safe here," Adrian told Elena, locking the steel reinforced doors behind them.
"This building is off the grid, and no one knows it belongs to me."
He pointed to a large bedroom down the hall.
"Take Mia and get some sleep. I have to make some calls."
Elena carried the exhausted toddler into the bedroom and tucked her into the heavy down comforter.
She sat on the edge of the bed, her mind spinning with the chaos of the night.
She had killed a man.
She had kissed a mafia boss.
And her home was gone.
An hour later, Adrian walked into the bedroom holding two glasses of water.
He had taken off his ruined tactical vest and washed the soot from his face.
He handed her a glass and sat down next to her on the edge of the mattress.
"The Russian syndicate is broken," Adrian said quietly.
"Without Julian, their leadership is fractured, and they are retreating."
Elena took a sip of the water, her hands finally stopping their violent shaking.
"So it's over?" she asked, looking up into his tired, dark eyes.
"We won," Adrian nodded, offering her a small, genuine smile.
"You and Mia are completely safe now."
He leaned in and kissed her again, this time deeply, pouring all of his relief and unspoken feelings into the embrace.
May you like
Elena closed her eyes, letting herself fall into the warmth of his arms, finally believing the nightmare was over.
Then, Adrian’s burner phone buzzed on the nightstand.
