Chapter 5 - The Frame Job

The flashing red and blue lights reflected brightly against the dirty snow as two police cruisers abruptly blocked the driveway.
Brenda reacted with terrifying speed, immediately crumpling the incriminating photograph and shoving it deep into her coat pocket.
Four uniformed officers stepped out of their vehicles, keeping their hands resting cautiously on their duty belts as they approached the yard.
Brenda instantly transformed her entire demeanor, letting out a dramatic, trembling sob as she rushed toward the police.
She pointed a shaking finger directly at me, tears streaming convincingly down her cold face.
She hysterically told the officers that I was violently trespassing and had just physically attacked her estate workers.
I stood frozen in the snow, completely stunned by the sheer audacity of her flawless, immediate performance.
I finally found my voice and loudly shouted that she was lying, desperately trying to explain the forged deed.
An older, stern-looking officer held up his hand, demanding that I step away from the property immediately.
I refused to move, frantically telling them about the commercial real estate ledger and the corrupt corporate developer.
The older officer let out a heavy sigh, completely ignoring every single word I said about the fraud.
He pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt and walked directly toward me with a grim expression.
He calmly informed me that there was an active, signed warrant for my immediate arrest.
The world seemed to stop spinning as I demanded to know what crime I was possibly being charged with.
The officer stated that I was being charged with three counts of felony embezzlement and severe financial elder abuse.
Brenda had apparently used her unrestricted access to Grandma's house to completely fabricate a trail of digital bank transfers.
She had skillfully framed me for stealing the funeral funds, ensuring I would look like the greedy, unstable granddaughter to the law.
The officers forcefully grabbed my arms, twisting them behind my back as the cold steel cuffs clicked tightly around my wrists.
I looked frantically at the estate workers, but they silently turned their backs, completely complicit in Brenda's elaborate lie.
Brenda wiped her fake tears away with a tissue, stepping close to me as the officers began to pull me away.

She leaned in so close that I could smell the stale cigarette smoke clinging to her expensive clothes.
She whispered softly in my ear that she was going to take absolutely everything, and I was going to rot in a prison cell.
