Chapter 2 - The Forged Signature

We arrived at the emergency room, and nurses immediately rushed Emily away from me.
I stood in the bright, sterile hallway feeling completely helpless.
Marcus touched my shoulder and promised he would stay close by.
A police officer named Detective Vance arrived thirty minutes later with a notepad in his hand.
I told him everything about the puncture mark, the missing boy, and what Emily had said in the ambulance.
Detective Vance simply sighed and closed his notepad without writing a single word down.
"Ma'am, your ex-husband is a respected pharmaceutical representative in this city."
"He called us twenty minutes ago to report that you were having a hysterical episode," Vance said flatly.
I stared at the detective in disbelief.
"My daughter has a needle mark on her arm!" I yelled.
Before Vance could respond, the automatic doors of the emergency room slid open.
Daniel walked in wearing a perfectly tailored suit, looking like a concerned father.
His lawyer, a sharp-looking man with an expensive briefcase, walked right beside him.
"Clara, you need to calm down and stop embarrassing our family," Daniel said smoothly.
"You drugged her, Daniel, and I am going to see you locked in a cage," I screamed at him.
The lawyer stepped between us and pulled a folded document from his briefcase.
He handed it directly to Detective Vance.
"My client has full medical and legal custody of Emily as of yesterday afternoon," the lawyer stated.
"That is a lie, we share joint custody!" I yelled.
Vance looked at the document and then held it up for me to see.
At the bottom of the page was my exact signature, perfectly replicated in blue ink.
"Mrs. Carter, you signed away your rights yesterday, so Mr. Mercer is taking his daughter home right now," Vance declared.
"If you try to stop him, I will arrest you for trespassing and harassment."

I watched in pure horror as Daniel smiled at me, knowing he had trapped me completely.
But he didn't know I had secretly placed a GPS tracker inside Emily's missing sneaker an hour ago.
