Chapter 4 - The Conspiracy

The name on the screen belonged to Judge Marcus Thorne.
He was the man overseeing my prosecution of a massive defense contractor fraud case.
Suddenly, the entire nightmare made perfect, terrifying sense.
Monica and David were not acting alone out of familial spite.
They were being paid to destroy my credibility so I would be removed from the trial.
If I was fighting a brutal custody battle and accused of child abuse, my career would be over.
The defense contractor would walk free, taking billions in stolen government funds with them.
Dana Reyes watched me as I stared at the frozen computer screen.
"What did you find?" the CPS investigator asked.
"I found the reason why my sister suddenly cares about my son," I replied.
I knew I could not trust the local police or my compromised command.
I had to fight this war entirely on my own.
"Ms. Reyes, I need you to document everything that happened today," I told her.
"I will," Dana promised, her skepticism of me replaced by genuine concern.
"But the custody hearing is still set for tomorrow morning in civilian court."
"If you don't show up with hard evidence, the judge will hand Eli over to your sister."
I nodded, my mind racing through military codes, statutes, and evidence protocols.
I had less than twenty-four hours to build the defense of my life.
I packed a bag for Eli and drove him to my most trusted friend's house off-base.
Sarah was a former Marine sniper who adored my son and owned a very large dog.
"Keep him safe, Sarah," I whispered as I hugged Eli goodbye.
"Nobody gets past the front door, Rachel," she promised.
I drove back to my empty house to gather my files.
As I walked into the dark living room, I noticed something wrong.
The red light on my alarm system was turned off.
I slowly reached for the standard-issue sidearm I kept in my hidden hallway safe.
May you like
I heard the distinct sound of a floorboard creaking in the kitchen.
Someone was in my house.
