Chapter 9 - The Broadcast

The local news producer stuttered, clearly struggling to process the massive scoop I had just handed him over the phone. "Who is this, and how can you possibly prove this ridiculous claim?" the producer asked skeptically. "Check your email right now; I just sent you high-definition photos of military-grade lithium drums stamped with federal seals," I replied. I heard the rapid clicking of a keyboard, followed by a sharp, audible gasp of pure astonishment. "Get your broadcast vans to Turner's Family Diner in exactly twenty minutes, or the government will bury this forever," I ordered. I hung up the burner phone and crushed it under my combat boot to prevent them from tracking my location. I moved swiftly through the dense Appalachian forest, using my deep childhood knowledge of the local hunting trails. I circled back toward the town center, avoiding the main roads heavily patrolled by Agent Vance’s corrupt federal team. When I reached the alley behind the diner, I saw three news vans already screeching to a halt out front. Reporters and cameramen poured onto the street, broadcasting live feeds directly to regional television networks. Agent Vance stood furiously on the sidewalk, screaming at his men to confiscate the cameras and push the press back. "This is an active federal crime scene, and you are all interfering with national security!" Vance bellowed angrily. The blinding lights of the television cameras illuminated the heavy federal transport holding my captive mother and Kayla. I seized the momentary distraction, slipping silently under the yellow police tape and approaching the rear of the van. I incapacitated the lone guard with a swift, silent strike to his carotid artery, lowering him gently to the pavement. I unlocked the heavy steel doors and quickly pulled my mother, Kayla, and Captain Miller out into the shadows. "We need to get you in front of those cameras right now," I told Miller, pointing toward the swarming journalists. Miller nodded grimly, adjusting his torn uniform to project the authority of a United States Army officer. We stepped out of the alley and walked directly into the blinding glare of the live television broadcast. "I am Captain David Miller, and the men attempting to arrest me are running an illegal military smuggling ring!" Miller shouted. The cameras instantly pivoted toward us, capturing Vance’s panicked and completely furious expression live on the air. "Colonel Turner uncovered the conspiracy, and Wade Cain ordered the murder of her father to hide the lithium deposit!" Miller continued. Vance realized the entire operation was unraveling on live television and reached aggressively for his holstered weapon. Before he could draw, the deafening roar of heavily armored vehicles echoed loudly down the main street. Four massive military tactical trucks, bearing the official insignia of the Army's internal affairs division, surrounded the diner. Heavily armed, loyal military police poured out of the trucks, leveling their weapons directly at Agent Vance’s corrupt team. A two-star general stepped out of the lead vehicle and walked briskly toward the chaotic, brightly lit scene. General Hammond was my commanding officer, and I had sent him the encrypted evidence hours before the ambush. "Special Agent Vance, you and your entire unit are under federal military arrest for high treason," General Hammond declared loudly. Vance’s face drained of color as he slowly raised his hands, completely defeated by the overwhelming military presence. The journalists captured every single second of the dramatic takedown, broadcasting the truth to millions of viewers. I hugged my mother tightly, feeling the immense weight of the six-year nightmare finally lift off my exhausted shoulders. Wade Cain's entire corrupt empire was crumbling to dust in the span of a single, chaotic morning. Just as the military police loaded Vance into a transport, a lone black sedan sped aggressively through the police barricade. The tinted window rolled down halfway, revealing Wade Cain holding a detonator identical to the one he left with Travis.
