Chapter 8 - The Decryption

I completely froze in the doorway, staring at Arthur in absolute, paralyzing disbelief.
"Who called you?" I demanded, adamantly refusing to step further into the cabin until I had an answer.
Arthur sighed heavily, leaning his heavy shotgun carefully against the rustic stone fireplace.
"It was Bernard," Arthur revealed plainly, pulling out a wooden chair at his small kitchen table.
My exhausted mind reeled as I tried to comprehend how a man actively recovering from a near-fatal overdose had successfully coordinated an assassination.
"Bernard woke up, completely realized Gareth was trying to kill him, and instantly activated his own ruthless contingency plan," Arthur explained.
I finally walked into the warm cabin and dropped my heavy medical bag onto the wooden floorboards.
"Bernard directly ordered Elias to kill Gareth?" I asked, rapidly piecing the horrifying puzzle together.
"Bernard built a highly ruthless financial empire, Irene; he is absolutely not a helpless old man," Arthur said grimly.
"He effectively used Gareth’s own corrupt fixer against him, but he still needed a convenient scapegoat to take the ultimate blame for the murder."
I sank deeply into the wooden chair, burying my terrified face in my trembling hands.
I hadn't just escaped my husband's suffocating cage; I had unknowingly walked directly into my father-in-law's highly organized slaughterhouse.
"We need to decrypt this drive right now," I said firmly, pulling the flash drive from my pocket and slamming it onto the table.
"If Bernard is setting me up, this drive is literally my only leverage to unequivocally prove I was framed."
Arthur nodded silently and powered up a massive, custom-built computer rig hidden quietly in the corner of the room.
He plugged the drive firmly in, his experienced fingers flying rapidly across the illuminated keyboard.
Endless lines of complex code reflected brightly in his thick glasses as he aggressively attacked the heavy encryption wall.
"This is incredibly strict military-grade security, Irene," Arthur muttered heavily, typing furiously.
"Can you actually break it?" I asked nervously, watching the progress bar stall completely at thirty percent.
"I personally taught the people who originally wrote this code," Arthur replied with a faint, undeniably arrogant smile.
Ten terrifying minutes later, the screen flashed bright green, and a massive directory of hidden files exploded across the monitor.
We absolutely expected to find concrete proof of Gareth's medical poisoning scheme.
Instead, we found something infinitely more terrifying and massive in scope.
The files contained thousands of offshore bank accounts, illegal arms transfers, and incredibly damaging political blackmail material.
Gareth and Bernard were not just wealthy bankers; they were actively laundering billions of dollars for an international crime syndicate.
"Irene, this is a massive, highly lethal death warrant," Arthur whispered, backing slowly away from the glowing screen.
"If we recklessly leak this to the FBI, we completely bring down the entire Langston criminal empire."
I looked closely at the screen, realizing I finally had the ultimate power to absolutely destroy the men who had ruined my life.
"Do it," I ordered him without a single second of hesitation.
Arthur hit a few rapid keystrokes, instantly initiating a massive data transfer directly to a secure federal server.

The upload bar finally appeared on the screen, slowly ticking toward one hundred percent.
Suddenly, the computer screen violently cracked, and Arthur collapsed heavily to the floor with a sniper bullet directly in his chest.
