Chapter 1

PART 1: SHE TOOK MY BABY

The first thing I felt after waking up wasn't pain.
It was emptiness.
The hospital room smelled of disinfectant and stale air. Machines beeped steadily beside me. My body felt broken, as if every bone had been shattered and glued back together incorrectly.
I tried moving my legs.
Nothing.
A sharp panic shot through me.
""Mark?""
My voice came out weak.
No answer.
I looked around.
No husband.
No flowers.
No visitors.
No baby.
The memory returned all at once.
The rain.
The screeching tires.
The truck running the red light.
Mark shouting my name.
Then darkness.
My hands immediately moved toward my stomach.
Empty.
For one horrifying second, I thought my son had died.
The door opened.
A nurse rushed inside.
""Mrs. Carter, please stay calm.""
""My baby.""
Tears instantly filled my eyes.
""Where's my baby?""
The nurse smiled gently.
""Your son survived. He's healthy.""
I broke down crying.
Relief flooded through me so intensely I couldn't breathe.
""When can I see him?""
The nurse hesitated.
That hesitation frightened me.
""Your husband and his mother have been caring for him.""
My chest tightened.
His mother.
Margaret Carter.
The woman who hated me from the moment I married her son.
According to Margaret, I wasn't good enough.
I came from a working-class family.
I didn't have wealthy parents.
I wasn't the daughter-in-law she'd dreamed of.
And worst of all...
I had taken her son away.
At least, that's how she saw it.
The nurse finally wheeled my son into the room.
The moment I saw him, everything else disappeared.
His tiny fingers.
His little nose.
The soft sounds he made while sleeping.
He was perfect.
Absolutely perfect.
I held him against my chest and cried.
""Hi, baby.""
I kissed his forehead.
""I missed you.""
For the first time since the accident, I felt peace.
Then the door slammed open.
The peace lasted less than thirty seconds.
Margaret stormed inside.
Mark followed behind her.
My smile faded immediately.
Margaret's eyes locked onto the baby.
Not me.
Never me.
Only him.
""My grandson.""
She walked straight toward the bed.
I instinctively held him closer.
Something about her expression felt wrong.
Cold.
Possessive.
Almost angry.
""He needs to come with me.""
I blinked.
""What?""
Margaret crossed her arms.
""You aren't capable of caring for him.""
The words hit me like another collision.
""I'm his mother.""
""You can't even walk.""
I looked at Mark.
Waiting.
Hoping.
Expecting my husband to defend me.
He said nothing.
Not a single word.
""Mark?""
His eyes avoided mine.
That hurt more than anything.
Margaret stepped closer.
""The doctors said your recovery could take months.""
""He stays with me.""
""No.""
The answer came out instantly.
""No.""
For the first time, Margaret's face twisted with rage.
""I said give him to me.""
I tightened my grip.
""He's my son.""
The slap came so fast I never saw it.
CRACK.
The entire room froze.
Pain exploded across my cheek.
The baby started crying.
I heard nurses shouting somewhere behind us.
But before I could react—
Margaret grabbed my son.
And ripped him from my arms.
I screamed.
Every instinct inside me exploded.
""No!""
I reached for him.
Ignoring the pain.
Ignoring the stitches.
Ignoring everything.
My body nearly fell out of the hospital bed.
""Give him back!""
The baby cried louder.
Margaret held him tightly.
As if I were some dangerous stranger.
As if I weren't his mother.
Tears streamed down my face.
I looked at Mark.
Begging.
Desperate.
""Please.""
My voice shattered.
""Do something.""
For a second, I thought I saw guilt in his eyes.
Then he spoke.
The words destroyed whatever remained of my heart.
""Maybe this is best for now.""
Silence.
The room disappeared.
The world disappeared.
Everything disappeared except those six words.
Maybe this is best for now.
Not:
""Mom, stop.""
Not:
""That's my wife.""
Not:
""Give our son back.""
Nothing.
He chose her.
And in that moment, I realized something terrifying.
The accident hadn't destroyed my life.
My husband had.
As Margaret carried my screaming newborn out of the room, she turned back and smiled.
A cruel smile.
A victorious smile.
The smile of someone who believed she had won.
What she didn't know...
Was that I had just stopped being afraid.
And when I finally left that hospital...
I was going to take back everything they stole from me.
May you like
Including my son.
