Chapter 4 - The Unlikely Alliance

The Chicago syndicate leader stared at us with cold, calculating eyes.
His name was Victor Rossi, the older brother of Clara's murdered husband.
He slowly stood up from the leather sofa, flanked by four massive, heavily armed enforcers.
Clara gasped in absolute horror and instinctively pulled Ellie behind her legs.
I raised my assault rifle and aimed it directly at Victor's heart without a second thought.
I demanded to know how he had found my most heavily guarded secret safehouse.
Victor casually raised his hands and stated that he did not come here to fight me.
He explained that he had been tracking Dante's illicit financial movements for the past six months.
He knew Dante was the one who murdered his brother, and he wanted absolute revenge.
Victor looked at Clara and softly promised that he was not going to hurt his own niece.
He proposed a temporary, highly dangerous alliance to completely destroy my traitorous brother.
I did not trust the Chicago boss, but I knew my personal army was currently decimated.
I slowly lowered my weapon, silently agreeing to hear the details of his tactical plan.
Victor explained that Dante was planning to sell the stolen ledger to a Russian cartel tomorrow night.
If that transaction happened, Dante would have enough money to wipe both of our families off the map.
Clara bravely stepped forward and interrupted the tense negotiation between the two mafia bosses.
She declared that the ledger was currently hidden inside a public locker at the central train station.
She said she had the only physical key required to retrieve the damning evidence.
Victor smiled grimly and praised her for being incredibly smart and resourceful.
He offered to provide a heavily armed escort to retrieve the book at dawn.
I agreed to the plan, knowing we desperately needed that ledger to destroy Dante's credibility with the Commission.
We spent the rest of the night planning the dangerous infiltration of the busy train station.
Ellie slept peacefully on the old sofa, wrapped entirely in my large winter coat.
I sat in the dark corner, polishing my weapons and preparing for an absolute bloodbath.
As the sun finally began to rise over the city skyline, my encrypted phone suddenly buzzed.
I answered the call and heard Dante's dark, arrogant laughter echoing through the speaker.
He mocked me and stated that he already knew we were hiding in the Brooklyn safehouse.

Dante happily announced that he had rigged the entire building with military explosives while we were sleeping.
He gave me exactly ten seconds to look out the window before he pressed the detonator.
