Chapter 3 - The Secret Ally

The cold metal of the handcuffs felt like solid ice against my fragile, aging wrists.

I looked back at my son, begging him with my eyes to stop this horrible madness.

Alexander stood completely frozen like a stone statue, staring at the floor while his wife held onto him.

I did not fight the officers as they roughly led me out to the waiting squad car.

The wealthy neighbors were peeking out of their windows, watching the poor cleaning woman being hauled away in disgrace.

They put me in the back seat, and the heavy doors locked with a loud, final clunk.

I closed my eyes and let a single, hot tear roll down my wrinkled cheek.

I had finally lost my son to the very monsters I had sacrificed my life to protect him from.

The cruiser pulled away from the beautiful suburban house I had scrubbed dirty toilets to help him buy.

We drove in complete silence for ten minutes before I noticed something very strange.

We were not heading toward the downtown hospital or the police precinct.

The car suddenly turned down a secluded, heavily guarded road leading to the wealthiest estates on the edge of town.

"Where exactly are you taking me?" I asked, my voice trembling for the first time.

The driver did not answer, keeping his eyes firmly fixed on the dark road ahead.

Panic started to build aggressively in my chest as Ewald’s dark threat echoed in my mind.

He had boldly claimed he owned the police, and now I was being taken to an undisclosed location.

The cruiser finally pulled up to a massive wrought-iron gate that slowly swung open.

We drove up a mile-long driveway and stopped directly in front of a sprawling, magnificent mansion.

The officer in the passenger seat turned around, smiled politely, and unlocked my handcuffs.

"You can get out now, Mrs. Morgen," he said with absolute respect.

I rubbed my sore wrists and stepped out of the car, feeling completely bewildered.

Standing proudly on the front marble steps of the mansion was a tall man in a flawlessly tailored suit.

It was Mr. Sterling, the famous billionaire owner of the corporate high-rise I had cleaned for twenty years.

"Hello, Helga," he said with a warm, incredibly genuine smile.

"I heard you were having some serious trouble with the new in-laws."

I stared at him in utter shock, unable to comprehend how a man of his stature was involved.

"Mr. Sterling, what is happening right now?" I asked, walking slowly up the steps.

"The police officers you met work for my elite private security firm, Helga," he explained kindly.

"When my legal team heard the audio from your transmitter, we knew Ewald would twist the narrative, so we intercepted the emergency call."

I let out a massive, shuddering sigh of relief, feeling my weak knees threaten to buckle.

Mr. Sterling gently caught my arm and led me inside to a grand, fire-lit study.

He poured me a glass of water and handed me a thick, sealed manila folder.

"Alexander did not betray you because he wanted to, Helga," Mr. Sterling said gravely.

"He lied to my fake police officers because Ewald literally has a gun to his head."

I opened the folder with shaking hands and gasped at the horrific photographs inside.

"They framed him," I whispered in pure horror.

"And if you do not help me steal the master blueprints from Alexander’s firm by midnight, Ewald is going to send your son to federal prison."
