Chapter 7 - The Override

"Try it again!" I yelled over the blaring security alarms.
Matthias wiped his wet hand on his slacks and pressed it against the scanner a second time.
Access Denied: Biometric Profile Revoked.
"My father deleted me from the system," Matthias realized, absolute despair washing over his face.
"He revoked my access so I couldn't stop the lockdown."
I stared at the heavy steel shutters, realizing we were completely entombed in this mansion.
There were only eleven minutes left on the basement timer.
"There has to be another way to override the magnetic locks," I insisted.
"Arthur is the only other person with a registered biometric profile," Matthias panicked.
Arthur was lying unconscious in the basement, and we didn't have time to drag his body up two flights of stairs.
I looked down at my pregnant belly, a sudden, wild realization hitting my medically trained mind.
"Matthias, grab my purse from the coat room," I ordered.
"What are you talking about?" he yelled frantically.
"Just do it!" I screamed, pointing the gun at his chest.
He ran to the coat room and returned seconds later with my designer handbag.
I ripped it open and pulled out my emergency trauma kit.
"Arthur said the trust transfers to the first born grandchild," I muttered, thinking rapidly.
"The security system is integrated with the family trust database."
I pulled a sterile scalpel and a heavy glass blood-collection vial from the kit.
"What are you doing?" Matthias asked, turning pale.
"I just had an amniocentesis test done two days ago," I explained rapidly.
"The fetal DNA is a direct genetic match to the Dre bloodline."
I didn't have amniotic fluid, but I had something else that carried a massive concentration of fetal DNA.
My own blood.
Because of fetal-maternal hemorrhage during pregnancy, my bloodstream carried the genetic markers of Arthur's grandchild.
I sterilized my thumb, ignored the stinging pain, and sliced a deep cut across my skin with the scalpel.
I smeared my heavily bleeding thumb directly onto the glass biometric scanner.
The machine hummed loudly, its laser rapidly analyzing the complex genetic material mixed in my blood.
The agonizing seconds ticked by as the system processed the unauthorized sample.
Suddenly, the screen flashed a brilliant, blinding green.

Override Accepted: Heir Recognized.
A massive metallic clunk echoed through the foyer as the heavy steel doors finally unsealed.
