Chapter 8 - The Sacrifice

Laser fire filled the cavern. Silas shoved Maya behind the heavy titanium console, taking a grazing shot to the shoulder.
"Turn the key, Maya!" Silas roared over the deafening gunfire.
"The system is locked!" Maya screamed, twisting the obsidian drive. It wouldn't budge. "He initiated a manual override!"
Kaelen laughed, walking slowly across the catwalk. "You can't reverse the flow without a massive thermal surge to break the lock. A surge you don't have."
Maya looked at Sam. The little boy was staring at the massive, swirling core of the engine. He wasn't crying anymore. His eyes were glowing with a terrifying, bright orange light. His Ignis mutation was reacting to the central machine.
"Maya," Sam whispered, his voice echoing strangely in the vast cavern.
Before she could stop him, Sam unbuckled himself from her back. He stepped out from behind the console, walking directly toward the glowing core.
"Grab the boy!" Kaelen yelled, sudden panic in his voice.

An Enforcer lunged for Sam, but the moment his armored hand touched the child’s skin, the armor melted like wax. The Enforcer screamed, falling back.
Sam placed his tiny hands on the glass of the Central Engine.
