CHAPTER 1 The Video That Turned a Billionaire Into a Stranger

he world seemed to tilt.

The rain slowed to a whisper, as if even the sky wanted to hear what was about to happen.

Richard Hawthorne stared at the recorder in his son’s trembling hand like it was a loaded weapon.

“What nonsense is this?” he said sharply. “Noah, give that to me.”

“No!” Noah screamed, clutching it tighter. “You have to watch it! Emily said if anything bad happened, we had to show you!”

I sucked in a breath.

I had never planned for this moment to happen in front of the gates.
I had never planned for the boys to be the ones to expose the truth.

Victoria stepped forward, her heels sinking into the wet stone. “Richard, this is absurd. She’s clearly manipulated them. Look at her—she’s been filling their heads with stories.”

Her gaze sliced toward me, poisonous and desperate.

But Richard wasn’t looking at her.

He was looking at his sons.

At the way Ethan’s chest heaved like he couldn’t get enough air.
At the way Liam clung to my leg like letting go would mean falling into an endless void.
At the way Noah—his most serious, most cautious child—was shaking not with fear, but with fury.

“Play it,” Noah begged again, tears streaming down his cheeks. “Please, Daddy.”

Something shifted.

Richard reached out slowly and took the recorder.

The screen flickered.

The image was grainy, recorded from one of the library’s old security monitors—one Richard himself had installed years ago and then promptly forgotten.

The timestamp blinked: Two days ago.

The library appeared empty.

Then Victoria walked in.

She glanced over her shoulder, then toward the camera, clearly unaware it was active.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

On the screen, she placed her purse on the mahogany desk.
Then she reached into my open cleaning bag.

Richard’s brow furrowed.

“What is she doing?” he muttered.

The video continued.

Victoria pulled out her Rolex, stared at it for a moment… then deliberately slid it back into my bag.

The sound of Noah sobbing filled the real world.

“She put it there,” he cried. “She lied!”

Richard stiffened.

But the worst part hadn’t even come yet.

Victoria on the screen reached deeper into my bag and pulled out a small white bottle.

The boys’ medication.

The heart medicine I counted every single night.

On the video, my own voice echoed faintly from another room.
“I’ll be right back, Miss Lane.”

Victoria smirked.

Then—without hesitation—she unscrewed the bottle and poured several pills into her palm.

“No…” I whispered.

She walked calmly to the sink hidden behind the antique globe cabinet and flushed them away.

Richard’s breath hitched.

The recorder slipped slightly in his grip, but the video kept playing.

Victoria leaned against the counter and pulled out her phone.

“Yes,” she said into it, her voice cold and amused. “I got rid of them. If one of the boys has an episode, everyone will blame the maid. Richard already trusts me.”

She laughed softly.

“A tragedy brings people closer, you know.”

The screen went black.

The silence afterward was deafening.

Richard didn’t move.

Didn’t speak.

Didn’t breathe.

The rain soaked his tailored suit, but he didn’t seem to notice.

Victoria took a step back.

“Richard,” she said weakly. “That video—someone altered it. She must have—”

“Stop,” he said.

The word was quiet.

But it sliced through her like glass.

He turned to his sons.

“Is this true?” he asked, his voice hoarse. “Emily was hiding the medicine?”

Noah nodded violently. “She counted it every night. She told us it was our superhero pills.”

Ethan sniffed. “She said bad people sometimes try to take things they don’t understand.”

Liam whispered, “She said if we felt funny in our chest, we had to tell her first.”

Richard closed his eyes.

When he opened them again, something in them was gone.

The arrogance.
The certainty.
The unshakable belief that he was always right.

He looked at Victoria like he was seeing a stranger.

“Get away from my children,” he said.

“What?” she gasped. “Richard, don’t be ridiculous—”

“I said,” he repeated, stepping between her and the boys, “get away from my children.”

Security guards were already moving.

Victoria screamed as they grabbed her arms.

“You can’t do this to me!” she shrieked. “I’m your fiancée!”

Richard didn’t even turn around.

“You were,” he said coldly.

She was dragged back toward the mansion, kicking and cursing, her perfect image shattering with every step.

The gates closed again.

But this time…

They didn’t close on me.

Richard turned toward me.

Toward the woman he had thrown into the rain.

His voice broke.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I was wrong.”

The boys surged forward, wrapping themselves around me like vines, crying into my soaked uniform.

“Don’t go,” Liam begged.
“Please stay,” Ethan whispered.
“Daddy didn’t mean it,” Noah said fiercely. “But we need you.”

Richard dropped to his knees in front of us.

The billionaire.
The man who never bowed to anyone.

“I don’t deserve your forgiveness,” he said, his voice shaking. “But if you leave now… I don’t know how to keep them safe.”

I looked down at the boys.

At my boys.

And I realized something terrifying.

This wasn’t over.Because the truth I had been hiding…

May you like

Was far bigger than a stolen watch.
