Chapter 8 - The Biscayne Run

The starting line for the Midnight Run was ten miles offshore, marked by two massive, floating flares burning blood-red against the pitch-black ocean.

A dozen boats were idling in the chop. They were masterpieces of modern engineering—sleek, aerodynamic, glowing with LED neon lights, and sponsored by billionaires. At the center of the pack was The Apex, a fifty-foot, dual-turbine hyper-boat owned by Marcus Thorne. Thorne wasn't driving; he had hired a professional offshore racing champion named Vance 'Viper' Cross to pilot it.

When The Phantom idled up to the starting line, the radio chatter exploded with laughter.

"What is that piece of junk?" a voice crackled over the open VHF channel. "Someone get the Coast Guard to tow that antique back to the museum!"

Marcus Thorne, sitting safely on his mega-yacht The Sovereign miles away, watched the drone footage on a massive screen. He sneered, sipping his champagne. "Elias Vance. You stubborn old fool. Sink him, Cross."

At exactly midnight, a flare shot into the sky, bursting in a shower of green sparks.

The race began.

The noise was apocalyptic. Twelve boats hammered their throttles simultaneously, tearing the ocean surface apart in a massive explosion of white water. The modern turbine boats, including The Apex, surged forward instantly, their lightweight hulls skimming the surface.

The Phantom was heavier. It lagged for the first quarter-mile.

"We're dropping back!" Sarah yelled over the comms in her helmet, watching the radar screen. "Thorne's boat is already pulling a mile ahead!"

"Let them burn their fuel," Elias replied calmly, his eyes locked on the dark horizon. He gripped the wheel, feeling the boat fight the ocean chop. "The modern boats are built for speed on flat water. The route takes us through the Devil’s Wash. It's rough tonight. They’ll have to slow down so they don't flip. We won't."

Ten miles in, the ocean turned violently hostile. Eight-foot swells began tossing the lighter boats around. The Apex was forced to drop its speed to fifty miles an hour to avoid going airborne and crashing.

But The Phantom was built like a spear. Her heavy aluminum hull didn't bounce over the waves; she crushed through them. Elias shoved the throttles to the firewall. The twin V8s screamed, burning aviation fuel at an ungodly rate.

The Phantom hit a massive swell, launching into the air. Sarah screamed, bracing for impact. The boat slammed down into the trough with a bone-shattering CRACK, but the hull held. Elias didn't lift his foot.

One by one, the battered, scarred black boat began overtaking the billion-dollar toys in the dark.
