Chapter 10 - The Flight To Nowhere

I didn't stay to watch the flames consume the beautiful monster who had given birth to me.

I kicked open the rotting back door of the cabin and sprinted blindly into the dark, freezing forest.

Heavy gunfire shredded the ancient pine trees completely around me, raining sharp wooden splinters onto my shoulders.

I followed the rough digital coordinates on my mother's stolen phone, running until my bare feet were totally numb.

The dense forest suddenly broke open, revealing a vast, perfectly still mountain lake reflecting the pale moonlight.

Floating gently at the end of a rotting wooden dock was a sleek, twin-engine seaplane with its propellers already spinning.

I ran down the slippery wooden planks, practically throwing myself through the open side door of the aircraft.

I strapped Elliot securely into a leather passenger seat, completely collapsing into the chair beside him.

The plane immediately surged forward, the heavy pontoons lifting smoothly off the dark, freezing water.

I stared out the small oval window, watching the violent, terrifying chaos of the mountain completely disappear below us.

My chest heaved with heavy, painful sobs of absolute, overwhelming relief.

I had successfully survived the cartel, the corrupt police, and my murderous parents.

I was finally flying away to a brand new life where my son would be completely safe forever.

The heavy metal door connecting the passenger cabin to the small cockpit suddenly clicked open.

A tall man stepped slowly out of the shadows, wearing a crisp, perfectly tailored pilot’s uniform.

He casually removed his dark aviator sunglasses and ran a hand through his slightly greying hair.

He had a distinct, jagged scar cutting deeply through his left eyebrow.

Julian flashed me a brilliant, terrifyingly charming smile.

“Hello, Clara,” he whispered softly over the loud roar of the plane's engines.

“Thank you so much for bringing my beautiful son right back to me.”
