Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

I woke up to the steady, rhythmic beeping of a hospital heart monitor. Bright sunlight streamed through the window of the sterile private room. I turned my head and saw Maria sleeping in a chair beside my bed, holding my hand tightly. Sofia was curled up on the small sofa, coloring quietly in a picture book. I squeezed Maria's hand, and she instantly woke up, tears of joy filling her eyes. "You survived," she whispered, leaning down to kiss my forehead. Over the next two weeks, I recovered slowly under heavy federal guard. The FBI director visited my room and offered me a deal I could not refuse. In exchange for my testimony and the decrypted hard drive, I was granted full legal immunity. I surrendered my entire criminal empire, every club, and every warehouse. I walked away from the mafia life forever. Three months later, Maria officially resigned from the agency. We bought a beautiful, quiet house on the coast of Maine, miles away from the darkness of New York. I became the husband Maria deserved and the father Sofia needed. I finally understood that affection was not a weakness, but the very thing that made life worth living. The ghosts of my past were finally laid to rest, and our family was entirely at peace. One sunny afternoon, we were sitting on the porch watching Sofia play in the sand. A delivery truck pulled up to the driveway and dropped off a small, unmarked wooden box. I walked over and opened the lid, expecting a gift from Maria's old colleagues. Inside was a pristine golden pocket watch that had belonged to my supposedly dead father. A handwritten note was tucked beneath it, bearing a single terrifying sentence. "Did you really think I was dead, my son?"
