Chapter 9 - The Override

"Drop the weapon, Dominic, or your brilliant translator dies right here," a voice echoed from the shadows.
Three heavily armed mercenaries stepped out from the adjacent classrooms, their tactical rifles aimed directly at us.
Dominic slowly lowered his gun to the marble floor, kicking it away with his foot.
Dr. Aris Thorne emerged from his office, wearing a tweed jacket and a completely unapologetic smile.
"I truly am sorry it had to end this way, Casey, you had such a promising academic career," Thorne sighed.
"You used my research to track down the missing pieces of the ledger," I realized, feeling profoundly violated.
"Knowledge is power, my dear, and you were simply a tool to help me reclaim my grandmother's empire," he confessed calmly.
He gestured toward his office, where a massive server bank was humming loudly in the corner.
A large monitor displayed a progress bar that read: Municipal Server Wipe – Ninety-Five Percent Complete.
"Once that hits one hundred, the Russo family officially ceases to exist," Thorne bragged to Dominic.
Dominic did not look at the screen; his eyes were entirely focused on the mercenary standing closest to me.
"You forgot one critical detail about my family, Professor," Dominic said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
"And what is that?" Thorne asked, raising an arrogant eyebrow.
"We never surrender," Dominic roared, launching his body forward with explosive violence.
He tackled the closest mercenary, twisting the man's rifle upward just as a barrage of bullets tore through the hallway.
The deafening roar of automatic gunfire shattered the quiet academic building.
I dove wildly toward Thorne's office, sliding across the polished floor to avoid the deadly crossfire.
I scrambled behind Thorne's heavy oak desk just as the monitor beeped loudly above my head.
The screen flashed red: Ninety-Eight Percent Complete.
I grabbed the keyboard, my fingers flying across the keys as I desperately tried to access the override command.
The system was locked behind a complex, linguistic encryption heavily rooted in the 1947 German dialect.
I typed furiously, using every ounce of my doctoral research to break down the syntax of his password.
Outside the office, the gunfire abruptly ceased, replaced by the heavy sound of a body hitting the floor.
I hit the final Enter key just as the progress bar hit ninety-nine percent.
The screen suddenly flashed bright green, displaying the glorious words: Override Successful.
I let out a massive breath of relief and slowly stood up from behind the heavy wooden desk.
May you like
I looked out into the hallway, expecting to see Dominic victorious and Thorne in handcuffs.
Instead, I saw Thorne pointing a smoking gun at Dominic, who was bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound to the stomach.
