Chapter 9 - The Trust Fund Trap

Ethan stared at the men he had personally hired to protect his family.

Their assault rifles were aimed directly at his chest.

“Stand down!” Ethan roared, his voice echoing across the driveway.

“I am the CEO of this company!”

The captain of the security team did not lower his weapon.

“Not anymore, Mr. Caldwell,” the captain replied coldly.

Dr. Vance stepped forward, holding a thick folder of legal documents.

“Julian didn't just want your son's organs, Ethan.”

“He wanted his entire life back.”

“Ten years ago, Julian faked his death to avoid federal prosecution for corporate fraud.”

Vance tapped the folder against his leg.

“But before he died tonight, Julian officially transferred all controlling shares of Caldwell Meridian to a blind trust.”

“A trust controlled entirely by Margaret Hargrove.”

Ethan felt the world spinning out of control.

He had built his massive empire from nothing, and his dead brother had stolen it in a single night.

“If Margaret controls the trust, she controls these men,” Claire whispered in terror.

“Where is she?” Ethan demanded, glaring at Vance.

“Margaret is currently on a private jet to a non-extradition country,” Vance lied smoothly.

“And you three are going to suffer a tragic home invasion.”

The security guards racked their weapons simultaneously.

Ethan pushed Noah behind him, preparing to die shielding his son.

Suddenly, the shrill wail of police sirens pierced the night air.

Dozens of red and blue lights illuminated the private road leading to the estate.

State police cruisers smashed through the front gates, heavily armed tactical units pouring out.

Vance’s smug smile vanished instantly.

The private security guards lowered their weapons, unwilling to engage in a massive shootout with state troopers.

A stern-faced detective approached Ethan, keeping her hand near her holster.

“Ethan Caldwell?” the detective asked.

“Yes,” Ethan replied, his heart pounding.

“We received an anonymous tip with overwhelming evidence of severe medical malpractice and attempted murder occurring on this property.”

The troopers quickly moved in and placed Dr. Vance in handcuffs.

Ethan looked at Claire in absolute shock.

“Did you call them?” Ethan asked her.

Claire shook her head, looking equally confused.

“I didn't have my phone,” she replied.

The detective turned back to Ethan with a grim expression.

“We found a woman bleeding out on the side of the highway a mile from here.”

“She is the one who gave us the evidence before she lost consciousness.”

Ethan frowned.

“Who was it?” he asked.

The detective checked her notepad.

“She identified herself as Margaret Hargrove.”
