Chapter 5 - The Safehouse

The safehouse was a dilapidated cabin in the Cascade Mountains, an old hunting property belonging to Reynolds’ late father. There was no cell service, no Wi-Fi, just a wood stove and absolute isolation.

For the next two days, Elias monitored Clara’s recovery. The tetrodotoxin was working its way out of her system, and her strength was returning. With her physical recovery came a fiery, vengeful clarity.

Sitting by the fire, wrapped in a blanket, Clara finally told them the whole story.

"Julian wasn't just hiding the failed trials," she explained, sipping hot tea. "He was orchestrating them. If NeuroGen fails, Sterling Pharma goes bankrupt. They are already manufacturing millions of doses. I found a hidden encrypted drive in his home office. It had the real patient data. Six people died during the Phase Two trials. Dr. Pendelton falsified their death certificates, claiming natural causes."

"That’s why Pendelton was so quick to declare you dead," Elias realized. "He's their cleaner."

"I copied the drive," Clara said. "I put it on a micro-USB."

"Where is it?" Reynolds asked, leaning forward.

Clara looked at Elias. "When Julian injected me... I knew I only had minutes before the paralysis set in. I swallowed it."

Elias stared at her, stunned by her sheer brilliance and survival instinct. "You swallowed a digital drive?"

May you like

"Yes. It should still be in my stomach. Or... intestines by now."

Elias let out a breath. "We need an X-ray. And we need a way to get it out."
