Chapter 5 - The Sniper in the Trees

Adrian threw himself backward into the armored car.
A high-caliber bullet shattered the pavement exactly where he had been standing.
"Drive!" he shouted.
The sedan violently accelerated across the manicured lawn.
Bullets rained down from the helicopter, pinging loudly off the reinforced roof.
Adrian checked on his son.
Owen was crying loudly now, terrified by the noise, but his color was returning.
Hannah was shielding both the baby and Maisie with her own body.
Natalie was screaming hysterically in the corner.
"Shut her up," Adrian snapped.
Hannah grabbed Natalie's arm and squeezed a precise pressure point.
Natalie gasped and instantly fell silent, her eyes rolling back slightly.
Adrian stared at his housemaid in disbelief.
"Where did you learn that?" he asked.
"A bad place," Hannah muttered, deliberately not meeting his gaze.
The sedan tore through a thick hedge and onto a hidden dirt access road.
The canopy of ancient oak trees temporarily shielded them from the helicopter above.
"Take us to the harbor warehouse," Adrian told his driver.
He dialed Victor Shaw's number, but it went straight to voicemail.
Adrian realized his trusted attorney had conveniently disappeared just before the attack.
The pieces were finally falling into place.
Victor had drafted the custody papers to force a meeting today.
Grant had locked the baby in the car as the ultimate distraction.
And the Morettis had moved in to steal the financial ledger.
Adrian had been completely outplayed in his own home.
The car skidded to a halt inside an abandoned shipping warehouse by the docks.
The rusty metal doors rolled shut, plunging them into dim, safe light.
Adrian exhaled, believing they had finally found a moment to regroup.

Then, the driver slowly turned around.
He was holding a gun pointed directly at Hannah's head.
