Chương 10 - The Bloodline

They stole a parked maintenance truck from the pier and drove straight into the heart of the south side.

Lorenzo drove with white-knuckled fury, ignoring his bleeding forehead and soaked clothes.

He parked two blocks away from the dilapidated brownstone on Racine Avenue.

"Stay behind me, and do not hesitate to shoot," Lorenzo ordered, handing her a spare weapon from the truck's lockbox.

They moved through the alleyways like ghosts, breaching the rear entrance of the house without making a sound.

The interior was pristine, heavily renovated into a modern fortress that contradicted its decaying exterior.

They crept down a spiral staircase into the reinforced subterranean bunker.

Voices echoed from the main room at the end of the hallway.

Lorenzo kicked the heavy steel door open, leading with his weapon raised.

Travis spun around in surprise, dropping the fake ledger onto a glass table.

Before Travis could draw his weapon, Lorenzo fired a single shot.

The bullet shattered Travis’s kneecap, sending him crashing to the floor with an agonizing scream.

Celia rushed into the room, sweeping her weapon across the space.

Maya was sitting in a leather armchair in the corner, looking completely unharmed.

"Maya!" Celia cried out, dropping her gun and sprinting toward her sister.

She threw her arms around the younger girl, crying tears of sheer, overwhelming relief.

Lorenzo stood over the writhing body of Travis, pressing the hot barrel of his gun against the man's forehead.

It was finally over.

They had won.

Maya slowly pulled back from the desperate embrace and looked deeply into Celia's eyes.

Her younger sister's expression was completely cold and utterly devoid of fear.

"You were always so ridiculously easy to manipulate, Celia," Maya whispered, her voice chillingly calm.

Celia froze, feeling a hard, metallic cylinder press sharply against her ribs.

Maya had drawn a hidden pistol and aimed it directly at her older sister's heart.

"Travis didn't kidnap me," Maya stated clearly, making Lorenzo freeze in his tracks.

Maya smiled, a dark, wicked expression that belonged to a complete stranger.

"I hired him to bring you to Lorenzo, because I needed access to Lorenzo's inner circle."

Maya looked past Celia and locked eyes with the mafia boss.

"Hello, Uncle Lorenzo," Maya smirked. "Your brother sends his regards."
