Chapter 9 - The Ambush at Pier 42

Gabriel kicked his door open, firing three controlled shots through the crack before diving onto the wet concrete.
The warehouse erupted into a deafening roar of automatic gunfire.
Sparks showered the air as rounds ricocheted off the armored steel plates of the vehicle.
Gabriel’s two guards engaged Moretti’s men, creating a violent perimeter of smoke and muzzle flashes.
Inside the tilting Suburban, Claire covered Lily with her entire body as the heavy crane hook groaned against the roof.
A bullet pierced the side window seal, shattering the inner glass into a spiderweb of cracks.
"Claire!" Lily screamed, clinging to her neck.
"I have you, baby," Claire whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"Close your eyes and hold onto my back."
Claire kicked the rear tailgate open, sliding down into the cold mud beneath the chassis of the truck.
She kept low, dragging Lily through the shadow of a rusted shipping container while the gunfight raged behind them.
She needed to reach the harbor control shack where the main power breaker was housed.
If she could cut the pier lights, Gabriel’s tactical team would have the night-vision advantage.
Claire burst through the rotting wooden door of the control shack, panting in the damp darkness.
She reached for the massive industrial breaker bar on the wall.
A cold steel barrel pressed against the nape of her neck.
"You really should have taken the agency’s severance check, little sister," Julianna’s voice purred from the shadows.
Julianna stepped into the moonlight streaming through the broken window, her face bruised and her eyes burning with manic hatred.

"You have your mother’s stubborn, pathetic chin," Julianna spat, leveling the gun at Claire’s forehead.
"Now hand me the child before I paint this shack with your brains."
