Chapter 9 - The Standoff

Victoria lay on the cold asphalt, fighting the heavy darkness that threatened to consume her.
The bullet had torn deeply through her shoulder, and the pain was absolutely blinding.
She reached out with a trembling, bloodstained hand and grasped Maya’s tiny fingers.
"Don't look at him, sweetie," Victoria gasped, struggling intensely to keep her eyes open.
Richard stood over them, an expression of utter disgust on his handsome face.
"You threw away a dummy drive, didn't you?" Richard snarled, kicking Victoria brutally in the ribs.
Victoria let out a weak, bloody laugh.
She had indeed thrown a cheap piece of plastic she found on Leo's desk, keeping the real drive hidden safely in her palm.
"You are never getting a single dime of my family's money," Victoria whispered.
Richard cocked the hammer of his silver revolver, aiming it directly at Maya.
"Give me the real drive right now, or the kid dies first," Richard threatened calmly.
Victoria’s heart shattered, knowing she had completely run out of options and clever tricks.
She slowly opened her bloody hand, revealing the glowing silver USB drive.
Richard smiled triumphantly and leaned down to pluck it greedily from her palm.
Suddenly, the screech of heavy tires echoed loudly at the end of the alley.
A heavily armored black van smashed directly into Richard’s parked SUVs, sending twisted metal flying everywhere.
Richard stumbled backward, raising his gun toward the massive new threat.
The back doors of the van flew open, revealing a team of heavily armed operatives wearing unmarked tactical gear.
They weren't the police, and they certainly didn't belong to Richard or her corrupt father.
"Secure the asset and grab the child!" a masked commander shouted, pointing a rifle at the chaotic scene.
A fierce firefight immediately broke out between Richard’s mercenaries and the mysterious new strike team.
Bullets chewed violently through the brick walls as Victoria dragged Maya behind a heavy metal dumpster.
"Auntie, I'm scared," Maya cried, covering her ears to block the noise.

Victoria held the little girl tight, realizing they were now entirely trapped between two ruthless armies.
A masked soldier suddenly rounded the corner, aiming his assault rifle directly at Victoria’s chest.
