Chapter 10 - The Happy Ending

Before David could pull the trigger, the heavy steel door above us burst open with explosive force.
A team of heavily armed FBI agents and Coast Guard tactical units swarmed down the staircase.
"Drop your weapons immediately!" the lead agent roared, aiming a laser-sighted rifle at David's head.
David's mercenaries instantly threw their assault rifles onto the floor and raised their hands in surrender.
David tried to run toward a side exit, but I stuck my foot out and tripped him hard.
He slammed face-first into the steel deck, his silver pistol sliding harmlessly out of reach.
Two agents aggressively pinned David to the floor, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"David Vance, you are under arrest for human trafficking, attempted murder, and corporate fraud," the agent announced.
I hugged Sarah tightly as we watched the monster who had ruined our lives get dragged away in disgrace.
Leo ran down the metal stairs a moment later, throwing himself into his mother's arms in a tearful, joyous reunion.
The nightmare was finally over, and the corruption had been dragged completely into the light.
One month later, the Seattle autumn leaves were turning a beautiful, vibrant gold.
Sarah and Leo had officially moved into a beautiful house just three blocks away from my apartment.
I was no longer the lonely, single woman eating cereal in the dark; I finally had a family again.
We spent every Sunday evening cooking dinner together, healing from the trauma and building a new future.
I was clearing the empty dinner plates from the table when I noticed the mail sitting on the kitchen counter.
I smiled, sifting through the standard bills and local advertisements.
At the bottom of the pile, there was a sleek, jet-black envelope with no return address.

I opened it and pulled out a high-definition photograph of me, Sarah, and Leo eating dinner, clearly taken through a sniper's scope just moments ago.
A handwritten note on the back read, "David was only a pawn, and you just stole from the real king."
