Chapter 8 - The Raid

Evelyn whipped around, her face twisting in pure rage. "You! What are you doing here? Security! This man is stalking me!"

But the security guards didn't move, because the FBI agents were already flashing their badges.

"Evelyn Cross," Thorne said, stepping forward with the cuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, embezzlement, extortion, and racketeering."

Evelyn’s mouth opened and closed. She looked at David Lin, who was sweating profusely and backing away. She looked at the clerk, who slowly slid the paperwork back across the counter. Finally, she looked at me.

"You can't do this," she whispered, her voice stripped of all its power. "I am the President of the Pine Valley Homeowners Association."

"Not anymore," I replied. "And you should know, while you were busy down here trying to steal my house, the feds were paying a visit to yours."

Simultaneously, twenty miles away, federal agents were kicking down the door of Evelyn’s pristine suburban home, boxing up computers, seizing offshore bank ledgers, and arresting her sister in Delaware. The entire neighborhood of Pine Valley watched as the tyrant who had terrorized them for years had her life dismantled box by box.

As they marched Evelyn out of the courthouse in handcuffs, a local news crew—tipped off by Thorne—flashed their cameras. The cream-colored suit she wore looked significantly less intimidating with her hands secured behind her back.
