Chapter 1 - The Shattered Gavel

"On the charge of first-degree manslaughter," Judge Sterling’s voice echoed through the courtroom, cold and mechanically precise, "this court finds the defendant, Leo Vance..."

Leo squeezed his eyes shut. His lungs forgot how to pull in air. He waited for the word that would drop the floor from beneath his feet. He waited for guilty.

"...Guilty."

A collective gasp rippled through the gallery. Leo felt his knees give out, the polished wood of the defense table the only thing keeping him upright. But before the judge could strike the gavel to seal the doom, a chair scraped violently against the floorboards.

"Objection, Your Honor."

The voice didn't come from their high-priced, sweat-drenched defense attorney. It came from Silas.

Silas stood tall, his midnight-blue suit perfectly tailored, his jaw set like carved granite. The courtroom went dead silent. You could hear a pin drop.

"Mr. Vance," the judge warned, his eyes narrowing. "You are out of line. Sit down, or I will have the bailiff remove you."

"You can't sentence him," Silas said, stepping out from behind the table. He didn't yell; he didn't have to. His voice commanded the room with terrifying authority. "Because Leo didn't drive the car that night. He didn't hit Arthur Sterling. I did."

Leo’s head snapped up, the blood draining from his face. "Silas, what are you doing? Stop!"

"Silence in my courtroom!" the judge roared, banging the gavel. "Bailiff, detain him!"

Silas didn't resist as two armed officers grabbed his arms, but he reached into his breast pocket and tossed a small, black USB drive onto the defense table. It clattered against the wood.

"Dashcam footage," Silas said, staring directly at the prosecutor, whose face had just turned a sickly shade of gray. "Unedited. It shows exactly who was behind the wheel. It shows me. And it shows Arthur Sterling pointing a loaded weapon at my brother before I accelerated."

The prosecutor scrambled backward. The judge froze. Leo stared at his brother, his mind fracturing into a thousand pieces.

"I bought the car. I wiped the prints. I drugged Leo to make him think he blacked out at the wheel," Silas confessed smoothly, looking at Leo with eyes full of a devastating, sorrowful love. "I'm sorry, kid. I couldn't let him kill you. And I couldn't let you live with the guilt."

As the cuffs clicked around Silas's wrists, the courtroom erupted into absolute pandemonium. Leo’s world wasn't ending; it was being violently rewritten.
