Chapter 10 - The Dawn of Justice

I stood perfectly frozen, the gun in my hand suddenly feeling like a massive, immovable anchor.
Vanessa burst into hysterical laughter, wiping tears of dirt and immense relief from her bruised face.
"Did you really think the Romeros would let me handle this alone?" she shrieked triumphantly over the noise.
I looked toward the cabin, terrified that a spray of bullets would tear through the thin wooden walls and hit my children.
I slowly lowered my weapon, letting it fall into the dirt with a heavy, defeated thud.
But as the helicopter touched down and the armed men poured out, I noticed something strange about their uniforms.
They weren't wearing the street clothes of cartel mercenaries; they were wearing authentic tactical federal agent gear.
The lead agent marched right past me, grabbing Vanessa by the shoulders and slamming her onto the hood of the SUV.
"Vanessa Vale, you are under arrest for conspiracy, racketeering, and domestic terrorism," he barked, slapping steel handcuffs on her wrists.
Vanessa thrashed wildly, screaming at the top of her lungs that they were arresting the wrong person.
I stood in stunned silence as another agent stepped forward, pulling off his heavy tactical helmet.
It was Victor, the police chief who had told me to run just a few hours ago.
"I'm sorry I had to lie to you on the phone, Evan," Victor said, pulling me into a brotherly embrace.
"Vanessa had my precinct bugged, so I had to make her believe her plan was working while I called in the FBI."
He explained that the black ledger she stole was actually a fake, a trap I had set months ago containing digital trackers and false accounts.
By taking the bait, Vanessa and the Chicago syndicate had provided the feds with enough evidence to raid all their properties simultaneously.
I rushed over to Grace, cutting her thick bindings and gently helping her to her feet.
We walked into the cabin together, scooping up Sophie and Caleb into a massive, incredibly tearful family hug.
I was pouring coffee in the kitchen while Grace laughed at something Caleb was doing in our new penthouse living room weeks later.
The nightmare was finally over, my name was entirely cleared, and my beautiful family was truly safe.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang, and I casually walked over to open it, finding only a small, elegant black box sitting on the welcome mat.
I opened it to find Caleb's old stuffed rabbit wrapped in a blood-red ribbon.

Pinned to the rabbit's ear was a note written in my late wife's unmistakable handwriting.
"I am still alive, Evan, and I am coming back for my children."
