Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Coup

The walls were closing in. I had exactly forty-eight hours before the final board vote that could strip me of my CEO title. I retreated to my secondary command center: a secure, windowless server room three floors beneath the city streets.
"I need everything on Thomas Sterling and Richard Vance," I told my lead data analyst, a brilliant twenty-two-year-old named Chloe. "Financial records, shell companies, offshore accounts. They are communicating somehow."
For the next ten hours, I didn't sleep. I drank black coffee and stared at lines of code and financial ledgers, tracking the invisible flow of money. The media outside was having a field day. "The Reclusive Billionaire Loses His Mind" was the prevailing narrative. They painted me as a Howard Hughes figure—brilliant, but descending into madness.
At 3:00 AM, Chloe hit a goldmine.
"Got it," she said, pulling up a complex web of transactions on the main monitor. "Sterling’s Cayman Island trust received a deposit of four million dollars last week. The source traces back to a shell corporation registered in Delaware. The CEO of that shell corporation is Julian Vance."
I smiled. It was a cold, predatory smile. Richard Vance was smart, but using his idiot son's name on a bribery shell company was a fatal error of arrogance.

"Print it," I ordered.
I looked at the crumpled gray sweater lying on the couch. I had spent my entire life trying to be invisible, trying to let the work speak for itself. But the world doesn't respect the work. It respects the theater. It was time to put on a show.
