Chapter 4 - Echoes of War

The heavy steel door at the top of the stairs began to groan under the force of a breaching charge.
Richard shoved a loaded pistol into Claire's shaking hands.
She tried to push it back, crying that she didn't know how to shoot.
Richard looked her directly in the eyes with fierce intensity.
He told her that her bloodline was forged in battle, and her instincts would know what to do.
A massive explosion ripped the steel door off its hinges, sending smoke cascading down the stairs.
Heavily armed mercenaries poured into the narrow stairwell.
Richard raised his rifle and fired a controlled burst, dropping the first two men instantly.
The bunker erupted into a deafening symphony of gunfire.
Bullets sparked against the metal walls, tearing apart the expensive computer servers.
Claire ducked behind a reinforced concrete pillar, clutching the pistol to her chest.
A mercenary flanked Richard's position, raising his weapon for a kill shot.
Without thinking, Claire stepped out from behind the pillar.
Her body moved with a fluid, practiced grace she didn't know she possessed.
She raised the pistol, aligned the sights, and pulled the trigger three times in rapid succession.
The mercenary fell backward, neutralized before he could fire a single shot.
Claire stared at the smoking gun in her hands, absolutely terrified of herself.
Richard yelled for her to keep moving toward the emergency escape tunnel in the back.
He threw a fragmentation grenade up the stairs to buy them a few seconds of precious time.
The explosion shook the earth, collapsing a portion of the stairwell on the attackers.
Richard grabbed Claire's arm and pulled her into a dark, narrow drainage pipe.
They crawled through the damp darkness for what felt like an eternity.
They emerged into the freezing rain a mile away from the burning cabin.
Sirens wailed in the distance as emergency services responded to the explosions.
Richard led them to a secondary stash spot where an old pickup truck was hidden under a tarp.
They climbed inside, completely soaked in rain and covered in dirt.
Richard started the engine and turned on the heater to warm them up.
He also turned on the local news radio station to monitor police frequencies.
A breaking news alert suddenly interrupted the static broadcast.
The news anchor announced a tragic mass shooting at the Prescott charity gala.
The report stated that dozens of innocent guests had been murdered in cold blood.
The prime suspect was identified as a former military operative suffering from a psychotic break.
Claire listened in horror as the radio broadcast her father's name.
Richard Hale was now the most wanted man in the entire country.

But the broadcast ended with a detail that made Richard freeze in his seat.
The news anchor reported that Daniel Prescott had been tragically killed in the crossfire.
