Chapter 1

The ballroom fell into complete silence.

No music.

No whispers.

No movement.

Only shock.

The little girl stood frozen in the center of the room, tears glistening on her cheeks as she stared at the miniature portrait hidden inside the old necklace.

Her hands trembled.

“That's my mother,” she whispered.

Again.

“That's my mother.”

The words echoed through the grand hall.

Across from her, billionaire Edward Sterling suddenly looked twenty years older.

His knees nearly gave out beneath him.

For two decades, he had carried a grief he never questioned.

A granddaughter he believed had died as an infant.

A funeral he never attended because he couldn't bear the pain.

A tiny closed coffin.

A lifetime of regret.

And now…

She was standing right in front of him.

Alive.

Beside the piano.

The blonde woman, Victoria Sterling, staggered backward.

“No…” she muttered.

“This can't be happening.”

Edward slowly turned toward her.

His eyes were no longer filled with confusion.

They were filled with truth.

“You told me she died.”

His voice was terrifyingly calm.

Victoria shook her head frantically.

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

Her breathing became erratic.

Every guest stood perfectly still.

Nobody dared interrupt.

Victoria glanced around the room.

Hundreds of eyes stared at her.

For the first time in years, she looked afraid.

Not afraid of embarrassment.

Afraid of exposure.

“You were never supposed to find her.”

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.

The girl looked between them.

“What is she talking about?”

Edward's jaw tightened.

“Tell her.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

Then the truth shattered twenty years of lies.

After the death of the girl's parents, a battle over the Sterling fortune had begun.

Millions of dollars.

Companies.

Properties.

Trust funds.

And there was only one obstacle.

A newborn baby girl.

The rightful heir.

Victoria's voice cracked.

“If she disappeared…”

The room became ice cold.

“…everything would belong to me.”

Gasps erupted everywhere.

The girl felt her legs weaken.

“No…”

Victoria finally whispered the unforgivable truth.

“I paid someone to take you away.”

The world stopped.

“You abandoned me?” the girl cried.

Tears streamed down Victoria's face.

But no one pitied her anymore.

Edward walked toward the girl and gently placed his hand on her shoulder.

The hand of a grandfather who had arrived twenty years too late.

Then he faced everyone.

“Tonight…”

His voice trembled.

“My granddaughter comes home.”

Suddenly—

A voice echoed from the entrance.

“Wait!”

Everyone turned.

An elderly gray-haired man stood there holding a sealed envelope.

His face was pale.

His hands were shaking.

He looked directly at Edward.

Then at the girl.

And said six words nobody was prepared to hear.
