Chapter 1 - The Unexpected Guest

The evening air in Roland Park was cool, but the atmosphere inside the Wells home felt suffocatingly warm.

My father immediately gravitated toward Dr. Richard Wells.

Gerald held a crystal glass of scotch, his posture stiff as he prepared to deliver his carefully rehearsed networking pitch.

He wanted to talk about a new medical plaza development he was bidding on.

He wanted to impress the man who practically owned the cardiothoracic world in Baltimore.

But Dr. Wells walked right past him.

He did not look at Phoebe, who was beaming in a stunning ivory silk dress.

He did not look at Thomas, his own son.

Dr. Wells stopped directly in front of me.

"Dr. Claire," he said, his voice deep and carrying an authority that made the entire room fall silent.

My father blinked, his smile faltering as his brain struggled to process what was happening.

"Richard, this is my other daughter, Claire," my father interrupted, stepping forward to redirect the spotlight.

"She works at a little hospital across town, but let me tell you about Phoebe's recent promotion."

Dr. Wells held up a single hand, and my father instantly snapped his mouth shut.

"A little hospital?" Dr. Wells repeated, his eyes locking onto my father with a sudden, freezing intensity.

"Gerald, your daughter is the lead surgeon who successfully modified my mitral valve repair technique last month."

Phoebe let out a small gasp of surprise.

Thomas smiled proudly, slipping his arm around Phoebe's waist.

"I read your latest case study in the surgical journal last week," Dr. Wells said, turning back to me with genuine admiration.

"Your adaptation of the suturing angle reduced the patient's recovery time by forty percent."

I felt the heat rise in my cheeks as I nodded.

"I had an excellent foundation to build upon, sir," I replied.

My father stood completely frozen, his scotch glass trembling slightly in his grip.

For twelve years, he had treated my career as a hobby, a distraction from the society life he valued.

Now, the man he idolized most was looking at me like I was the only person in the room who mattered.

"I didn't invite you here just to celebrate my son's engagement, Claire," Dr. Wells said softly.

He stepped closer, lowering his voice so only our immediate circle could hear.

"I am stepping down from the board at Hopkins, and I am purchasing St. Augustine Medical Center next month."

My father gasped, realizing the magnitude of the business deal he had completely missed.

"And when the acquisition is final," Dr. Wells continued, ignoring Gerald entirely.

"I want you to take over as the new Chief of Surgery."

May you like

Before I could even process the offer, a deafening crash echoed from the dining room.

Thomas dropped his champagne flute, his hands flying to his chest as his face drained of all color.
