Chapter 10 - The False Victory

Clara stared at Dante Rossi, her mind completely unable to process the sheer absurdity of his statement.

Victor Kaine, the most feared, ruthless syndicate boss in the city, didn't run the criminal underworld.

He was a subordinate.

He was a highly paid manager working for an even larger, more powerful shadow organization.

Dante Rossi looked down at Victor’s unconscious body and sighed heavily.

“Victor always was too dramatic,” Dante muttered, motioning for his medics to load Victor onto a stretcher.

“He could have just called me when Isabella started plotting her little coup, but he insisted on handling it internally to save face.”

Dante turned his attention back to Isabella, who was now kneeling on the wet pavement in zip-ties, looking absolutely terrified.

“You really thought the Colombians would back you against me, Isabella?” Dante asked, his voice dripping with condescension.

“I own the Colombians.”

“I own the ports, I own the politicians, and as of tonight, I own your entire family’s fortune.”

He gestured to his men.

“Take her away.”

“Lock her in the underground holding facility until I decide what to do with her.”

Isabella was dragged away, screaming and kicking, her grand coup completely crushed in less than five minutes.

Dante Rossi turned back to Clara, offering her a hand up from the wet pavement.

Clara ignored his hand and stood up on her own, glaring at the mob boss.

“You used my apartment,” Clara accused, her voice shaking with rage.

“You used me.”

Dante chuckled softly, tucking the black ledger into his jacket pocket.

“Victor used you, Dr. Hayes.”

“I simply stepped in to clean up his mess and secure my assets.”

He pointed toward a sleek, black medical transport van idling nearby.

“Victor will survive, thanks to your initial handiwork.”

“And because you protected my investment, I am willing to offer you a very generous reward.”

Dante pulled a pristine, white envelope from his pocket and held it out to her.

“Inside is a new passport, a plane ticket to Geneva, and access codes to an offshore account containing five million dollars.”

“A fresh start for the disgraced trauma surgeon.”

Clara looked at the envelope, feeling a massive wave of relief wash over her.

She had survived the nightmare.

She was free.

She took the envelope from Dante’s hand, clutching it tightly against her chest.

“I never want to see Victor Kaine or any of your men ever again,” Clara demanded fiercely.

Dante smiled warmly, stepping back into the shadows of the tactical helicopter.

“You have my word, Dr. Hayes.”

“Have a safe flight.”

The helicopter lifted off, disappearing into the stormy night sky, leaving Clara alone on the quiet, secure docks.

She walked away from the ruined SUV, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace for the first time in years.

She walked for two miles, eventually hailing a cab to a cheap motel near the airport.

She locked the door to her room, sat on the edge of the bed, and opened the pristine white envelope.

Inside was a shiny, new passport with her photo and a different name.

There was a first-class ticket to Geneva, departing in six hours.

And there was a small, folded piece of thick cardstock containing the bank account information.

Clara opened the cardstock, her heart soaring with the promise of a new life.

But as she read the numbers printed on the paper, her smile completely vanished, replaced by a cold, paralyzing terror.

The account number wasn't a routing code for a Swiss bank.

It was the exact medical license number she had been stripped of two years ago.

And written in elegant, cursive handwriting at the bottom of the card was a single, terrifying sentence.

"The malpractice lawsuit that ruined your career was orchestrated by me, Clara; you belong to the Kaine Syndicate now, and your shift starts tomorrow morning."
