Chapter 1 - The Echo of Silence

The word hung in the freezing air like a fragile piece of glass. Vincent Moretti stopped breathing. The heavily armed men behind him froze in place. For two grueling years, the city’s most feared man had spent millions on doctors. He had hired top therapists and flew in specialists from around the globe. None of them could pull a single syllable from his traumatized son. Yet here, in a filthy grocery store parking lot, a homeless woman had done the impossible with half a stale sandwich. Vincent slowly dropped to his knees. The expensive fabric of his tailored trousers soaked up the dirty slush on the pavement. He did not care at all. He reached out with trembling hands. Noah walked past me and buried his small face into his father's chest. A choked, agonizing sob escaped the mafia boss's throat. It was a sound of pure, unbroken grief mixed with overwhelming relief. I stood perfectly still, clutching my empty water bottle. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs. I knew enough about the streets to know that witnessing a powerful man in a moment of extreme vulnerability was incredibly dangerous. I took a slow, silent step backward. I planned to slip into the shadows and disappear forever. But Vincent’s head snapped up. His dark, piercing eyes locked onto me. The raw emotion vanished from his face, replaced by a cold, terrifying authority. He stood up, holding Noah firmly against his side. "Get her in the car," Vincent commanded. Two massive men in dark suits immediately lunged toward me. "No!" I screamed, backing away in sheer panic. "I didn't do anything wrong!" I pleaded. I raised my hands to defend myself. One of the men grabbed my arm with a grip like iron. Noah suddenly turned and shouted loudly. "Leave her alone!" Noah cried out. Vincent raised a hand, and the men instantly froze. The mafia boss took a slow step toward me. He opened his mouth to speak. Before he could utter a word, a bright red laser dot flickered across the chest of his black overcoat. I barely had time to comprehend what it was. The deafening crack of a sniper rifle echoed through the empty parking lot.
