Chapter 7 - The Floorboards
Clara dropped the file onto the desk, her blood turning to ice.
Frank closed the office door and locked it behind him.
"I was going to wait until Rourke took over the city to deal with you," Frank sighed.
"But you just couldn't stay in your lane, could you?"
"You poisoned my little brother," Clara said, her voice shaking with pure hatred.
"It was just business, Clara," Frank replied casually.
"The pharmaceutical market is incredibly lucrative, but human trials are hard to legally arrange."
He raised the gun, aiming it directly between her eyes.
"I am going to tell Leo you were the mole all along."
"I will tell him you let the assassin in, and I had to put you down to protect the family."
Clara closed her eyes, preparing for the deafening sound of the gunshot.
"That is a fascinating story, Frank," a deep voice interrupted.
Clara opened her eyes to see Leo standing in the corner of the office, stepping out from behind a heavy velvet curtain.
He looked exhausted, leaning heavily on his cane, but his eyes were filled with lethal fury.
Frank spun around, aiming the revolver at his oldest friend.
"You should be in bed, Leo," Frank sneered.
"I knew there was a rat, Frank," Leo said calmly, taking a slow step forward.
"I just didn't want to believe it was the man who stood beside me at my father's funeral."
"Your father was weak, and you are even weaker for letting a waitressing blood-bag keep you alive!" Frank shouted.
Frank tightened his finger on the trigger to shoot Leo in the chest.
Leo did not even flinch.
He simply pressed a small button hidden on the silver handle of his cane.
"Goodbye, Frank," Leo whispered.
The solid oak floorboards directly beneath Frank's feet violently exploded upward.
A concealed concussive charge blasted through the wood, sending Frank flying backward into the heavy bookshelves.

The revolver flew from his hand and clattered across the room.
Leo grabbed Clara's wrist and pulled her out of the ruined office before the smoke even cleared.
