Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The photograph on the screen froze the blood in Dominic’s veins.

It was a picture of the veterinary clinic’s waiting room.

Rossi was lying on the floor in a pool of blood, a bullet hole perfectly centered in his forehead.

Marco’s two guards were dead beside him, their throats brutally slashed.

Dominic’s thumb hovered over the screen, his hand shaking violently as a text message popped up below the photo.

"Did you really think a few dead guards would stop me?"

The text wasn't from Vincent Caldwell.

It was from the encrypted number Dominic had just used to contact the supposedly 'clean' federal prosecutor.

The prosecutor hadn't sent an FBI rescue team to secure the clinic.

He had sent a hit squad to finish the job Caldwell started.

Dominic stared at the phone in absolute horror, the magnitude of his mistake crushing him.

He hadn't secured Evangeline's freedom; he had just given her location directly to the men trying to kill her.

"What is it?" Marco asked, noticing the terrifying expression on Dominic's face.

Before Dominic could answer, the heavy iron gate of the cemetery violently slammed shut behind them.

Five black SUVs suddenly surrounded the perimeter, their headlights blinding in the dim morning light.

Dozens of armed men poured out of the vehicles, raising their weapons toward Dominic and Marco.

Standing calmly in front of the firing squad was Vincent Caldwell, completely unharmed, smiling triumphantly.

"You really should have checked the prosecutor's bank records too, Dominic," Caldwell sneered, leaning on his silver cane.

Caldwell gestured to the back of the lead SUV, where the trunk was slowly popping open.

"Now, give me the ledgers," Caldwell ordered softly, "or I will finish what I started with my sister right here in this graveyard."
