Chapter 10 - The False Victory

I answered the phone instantly, my heart pounding with anticipation.

"June, it's Grant," I said breathlessly, slamming the car door shut.

"I have the documents, and I made it out of the estate completely clean."

"Thank God," June cried softly through the receiver.

I put the car in drive and sped away from the burning compound, a massive smile finally breaking across my face.

"I am heading back to the motel right now," I told her, the weight of the world lifting from my shoulders.

I had the leverage to destroy my mother, the truth about my own bloodline, and the woman I loved waiting for me.

We could take the money from the hidden trusts, disappear to Europe, and raise our sons in total peace.

The nightmare was finally over.

I felt like the absolute king of the world as I sped down the empty, rain-slicked highway.

"Grant, you need to listen to me very carefully," June interrupted, her voice suddenly shaking with raw terror.

My smile faded slightly at the sheer panic radiating through the phone.

"What is wrong, June?" I asked, my grip tightening on the steering wheel.

"When you took the babies from the ward, I went back and wiped the hospital servers to cover your tracks," June explained frantically.

"I had to delete the mandated genetic testing panels we run on all premature infants."

I frowned, not understanding why this was an emergency.

"Okay, so you deleted the files," I said calmly.

"Grant, I looked at the DNA results before I permanently deleted them," June sobbed loudly into the phone.

I slammed on the brakes, the car skidding to a violent halt in the middle of the dark highway.

"The two infants you took from the incubator are genetically identical twins," June choked out, struggling to breathe.

"But the blood types prove absolutely, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that neither you nor Mara are their biological parents."

May you like

My blood turned to absolute ice.

"The babies sleeping in the motel room right now are not yours, Grant."
