Chapter 3 - The Escape

"Drop it!" Miller roared, aiming straight at the man's chest.
The man didn't flinch; he just smiled, revealing jagged, yellowed teeth.
In a lightning-fast motion, he hurled a heavy fire extinguisher directly at Miller.
The metal cylinder slammed into the detective, knocking him backward to the floor.
Miller's gun skittered across the polished linoleum, stopping inches from my feet.
"Run!" Miller gasped, struggling to catch his breath.
I didn't hesitate.
Clutching Lena tightly to my chest, I grabbed Emmy's hand and sprinted toward the surgical wing.
"You can't hide them from me!" the man bellowed, his heavy boots pounding behind us.
We burst through the swinging doors of Operating Room 4.
I slammed the doors shut and jammed a metal IV pole through the handles.
"Hide under the surgical table," I whispered to Emmy.
She scrambled into the darkness, pulling her unconscious sister with her.
The doors shook violently as the man slammed his shoulder against them.
The metal IV pole bent under the immense pressure.
I desperately searched the surgical trays for anything that could be used as a weapon.
My eyes landed on the defibrillator sitting on the crash cart.
I grabbed the paddles and cranked the machine to its highest setting.
The doors burst open, snapping the IV pole in half.
The man stumbled into the room, his eyes locked onto me with pure malice.
He lunged forward, his massive hands reaching for my throat.
I thrust the charged paddles squarely against his wet jacket.
"Clear!" I screamed, hitting the shock buttons.
The electricity surged through him, throwing his massive body backward into a glass cabinet.
He hit the ground hard, completely motionless.

I took a deep breath, thinking it was finally over.
Then, his fingers twitched, and his eyes snapped wide open.
