Chapter 8 - The Shattered Window

The deafening crack of the gunshot shattered the quiet, desolate winter night.

The cabin window exploded inward in a terrifying shower of deadly, sparkling glass shards.

Richard screamed in surprise as the bullet grazed his shoulder, causing him to drop the heavy hunting rifle.

I kicked the front door completely off its rusted hinges and stormed aggressively into the cabin.

I kept my gun trained squarely on Richard's chest as he stumbled backward holding his bleeding arm in shock.

"Don't move a single muscle, or I will put the next one right through your black heart," I roared.

Daniel let out a massive, shuddering sigh of relief, though he was still bound tightly to the heavy wooden chair.

"Sarah, thank God you are okay," Daniel breathed heavily, coughing from the smoke and dust.

I kept my eyes fiercely locked on the monster who had terrorized my family for years.

"You burned my little girl's face," I whispered, my voice dripping with pure, unadulterated hatred.

Richard smiled a sick, twisted smile, completely unfazed by the loaded gun pointed at his chest.

"She needed to learn respect, and you needed to be punished for tearing my family apart," Richard sneered proudly.

"You are a sick psychopath," I said, moving closer to kick his dropped rifle far across the wooden floor.

I pulled a sharp pocket knife from my coat and quickly sliced through the thick ropes binding Daniel's hands.

Daniel stood up, rubbing his deeply bruised wrists, and moved to stand protectively beside me.

"The police have Chloe and your corrupt deputy in custody right now," I told Richard confidently.

"Your stolen money is gone, your accomplices have failed, and you are going to rot in a federal prison."

Richard began to laugh, a deep, unsettling chuckle that echoed terrifyingly off the cabin walls.

"Did you really think I came up here tonight just to shoot my own son?" Richard asked mockingly.

He reached deep into his heavy winter coat and pulled out a small, remote electronic detonator.

"I lined the foundation of this cabin with enough dynamite to level the entire mountain," Richard revealed.
