Chapter 7 - The Doctor's Betrayal

Norah stared at the ruined tires, her mind completely blanking with exhaustion.

They were trapped in an underground concrete bunker with no way out.

The sound of elegant high heels clicking against the cement echoed from the shadows behind the car.

"I am incredibly impressed you made it this far, Mr. Hayes," a sophisticated female voice announced.

Norah spun around to see Dr. Aris stepping out from behind a concrete pillar.

She was the syndicate's chief medical officer, the very woman who had designed the forbidden trauma room.

Dr. Aris was wearing a pristine white coat, holding a sleek silver revolver with absolute steady precision.

"You slashed the tires," Declan rasped, leaning heavily against the side of his ruined SUV.

"I had to make sure you didn't leave before the poison finished its job," Dr. Aris smiled warmly.

Norah looked at Declan in horror, noticing for the first time that his veins were turning a sickly shade of black.

"The bullet didn't put you in that bed, Declan, my poisoned whiskey did," the doctor confessed.

Marcus had only shot him to make it look like a rival gang hit to satisfy the syndicate board.

Dr. Aris wanted the empire, and Marcus had been perfectly willing to share the throne.

While Dr. Aris was busy gloating, Norah silently reached down and grabbed a heavy steel lug wrench from the floor.

"It really is a shame about the maid, though," Dr. Aris said, aiming the revolver directly at Norah.

Before the doctor could pull the trigger, Norah swung the heavy wrench with all her remaining strength.

The steel bar shattered the doctor's wrist, sending the revolver clattering across the garage floor.

Dr. Aris shrieked in agony, dropping to her knees and clutching her mangled arm.

Declan suddenly collapsed, his eyes rolling back in his head as the poison finally overpowered his system.

Norah dropped the wrench and grabbed the screaming doctor by the collar of her white coat.

"Where is the antidote?" Norah demanded, shaking the woman violently.

Dr. Aris laughed through her pain, a hysterical, twisted sound that chilled Norah to the bone.

"There is only one dose left in the entire city," the doctor spat, blood dripping from her lip.

"And I locked it inside a safe miles away from this burning building."
