Chapter 3 - The Offshore Account

Dante pressed the barrel of the gun harder into the FBI agent's back.
He calmly told Miller that if he ever threatened his employee again, they would never find his body.
Miller raised his hands slowly, a nervous sweat breaking out on his forehead.
Dante ordered his security team to throw the agent out of the building.
Once we were back in the safety of the penthouse office, my legs finally gave out.
I collapsed onto the leather sofa and buried my face in my hands.
Dante poured a glass of expensive bourbon and handed it to me.
He told me he knew about my brother Leo and the facility in Evanston.
I looked up in shock, realizing that Dante Marino had investigated my entire life before hiring me.
He promised me that as long as I worked for him, the FBI would never touch my brother.
In exchange, he needed me to finish tracking the three million dollars Sal Genovese had stolen.
He believed Sal was not smart enough to set up the dummy accounts alone.
I sat at his massive desk and pulled up the encrypted banking software.
I bypassed the initial firewalls using the backdoor codes I had written myself.
The money had been routed through six different shell companies in the Cayman Islands.
Dante stood right behind my chair, his presence a heavy weight in the quiet room.
I finally cracked the final layer of encryption and traced the deposit to a private Swiss bank account.
I stared at the screen, unable to process the name registered to the account.
Dante asked me what was wrong.
I pointed a shaking finger at the computer monitor.
The account holding the stolen mafia money was registered to Clara Marino.

Dante stared at the name of his dead wife, his face turning pale.
The glass of bourbon slipped from his hand and shattered into a hundred pieces on the floor.
