Chapter 8 - The Fatal Betrayal

I froze completely, my finger tightening dangerously around the trigger of my hidden pistol as I stared at my captive son.
Ashley smiled a wicked, triumphant smile, the heavy silver revolver pressed firmly against Julian's temple.
She arrogantly admitted that she had easily tracked Julian's encrypted signal and ambushed the motel while I was driving to the gala.
Michael scrambled to his feet, looking at Ashley with a mixture of immense relief and sheer confusion.
He asked her why she brought the baby to the gala when they were supposed to be fleeing the country tonight.
Ashley did not even look at him as she calmly shifted her aim and shot Michael squarely in the chest.
The deafening roar of the gunshot echoed off the small walls of the coatroom as Michael collapsed backward into the expensive coats.
He gasped for air, blood pooling rapidly on his pristine white tuxedo shirt as he stared at his lover in absolute disbelief.
Ashley laughed coldly, declaring that she was framing me, the deranged, miraculously surviving wife, for the murder of my cheating husband.
She demanded that I hand over the digital override codes for the trust fund, or she would put a bullet in Julian's brain.
I slowly pulled the USB drive containing the authorization codes from my clutch purse, my hands shaking with absolute fury.
I tossed the small black drive across the room, watching it slide perfectly to a stop against the toe of her designer heel.
She picked it up with her free hand, her eyes gleaming with the manic greed of a woman who had just won fifty million dollars.
I demanded she hand over my son immediately, reminding her that she had everything she ever wanted.
Ashley simply smirked and casually mentioned that the baby carrier strapped to her chest felt incredibly light.

She pulled back the thick wool blanket to reveal that there was no baby inside the carrier at all.
She proudly announced that she had already injected my real son with a slow-acting, lethal neurotoxin back at the motel, and only she possessed the antidote.
