Chapter 6 - Crossfire

"Drop your weapon, Voss!" Evan screamed, pressing the stolen catering wrench hard against my windpipe.
Mara stopped dead in her tracks, raising her rifle but holding her fire to avoid hitting me.
"You are completely surrounded, Evan," Mara stated coldly, keeping her aim perfectly steady.
"Let your wife go, and maybe you will survive to see the inside of a federal prison."
The shootout in the background began to die down as the highly trained federal agents swiftly neutralized Julian's syndicate thugs.
Julian himself was currently pinned to the floor by two massive agents, his silver handgun kicked far out of his reach.
Victoria Bellacourt was weeping hysterically near the wedding cake, her perfect facade completely shattered.
"I am walking out of here with the decryption keys!" Evan yelled wildly, tightening his grip on my neck.
I gasped for air, feeling the undeniable, overwhelming urge to push the baby out of my body.
"Evan, please," I choked out.
"The baby is dying."
Evan did not care about the child; he only cared about the billions of dollars he thought I could unlock.
From the shadows of the stage, a figure in a ruined, chemical-soaked wedding dress slowly stepped forward.
It was Celeste.
She looked at her brother holding his pregnant wife hostage, and her expression was filled with absolute disgust.
"You ruined my wedding, Evan," Celeste whispered, her voice carrying an eerie calmness.
She raised the massive, serrated cake knife she had been holding for the ceremonial cutting.
Without a single moment of hesitation, Celeste drove the heavy blade deeply into the back of Evan's shoulder.
Evan howled in excruciating pain, releasing his grip on my neck and collapsing onto the wet marble floor.

I fell forward, gasping for breath, as Mara Voss threw herself onto the ground beside me.
"You have to push, Claire!" Mara yelled, tearing away the soaked fabric of my ruined dress.
