Chapter 7 - The Devil's Bargain

The reality of the situation hit me like a physical blow to the chest.

Renzo, Vincent's most trusted right-hand man, was the traitor who let David inside.

He smiled a cold, dead smile that made my skin crawl.

"I sold you out to the Russians for ten million dollars, Vincent," Renzo admitted proudly.

"Your empire is crumbling, and I am not going down with the ship."

He demanded that Vincent log into the offshore banking portal and transfer the remaining funds.

Mia started to cry, terrified by the angry voices and the dark room.

I stepped completely in front of her, shielding her tiny body with my own.

Vincent sighed, a sound of deep exhaustion and bitter defeat.

"Fine," Vincent said, pulling a encrypted tablet from his pocket.

"You win, Renzo. I will initiate the transfer."

Renzo chuckled and stepped closer to watch the screen.

My eyes darted between the two men, searching for any way out of this nightmare.

That was when I looked closely at the grenade in Renzo's hand.

As a cleaner, I had dusted the security office training room a hundred times.

I recognized the painted blue stripe around the bottom of the explosive casing.

It was a fake training dummy used to drill new recruits.

Renzo was completely bluffing to secure the money.

Vincent typed in his password, and Renzo eagerly leaned over to verify the numbers.

I didn't think about the consequences.

I didn't hesitate.

I pulled the trigger of the heavy pistol.

The gunshot was deafening in the enclosed concrete space.
